Newcastle United fans make same Sir Alex Ferguson joke after beating Aston Villa again

Not only are Newcastle United fans enjoying a great performance from their team on Tuesday night, but they’re poking fun at Sir Alex Ferguson as well.

With just one win in their last four Premier League matches, a trip to Aston Villa hardly seemed like an ideal prospect for the Magpies.

Villa are flying high under Unai Emery, sitting fourth in the Premier League table on the same points as champions Manchester City. To add to that, the Villains had not lost at home in 17 matches.

But that came to a brutal end as Newcastle ran out 3-1 winners thanks to a Fabian Schar double and an own goal from Alex Moreno. Ollie Watkins pulled one back late on but it wasn’t enough.

It’s the second time Newcastle have handily beaten Villa this season having defeated them 5-1 on the opening day in August. After that match, legendary Manchester United boss Ferguson drew the ire of Newcastle fans for claiming Villa still impressed him more.

What Ferguson said

“I watched Aston Villa and Newcastle and I can’t believe the scoreline, honestly,” he told NBC Sports. “Aston Villa played fantastic football and just lost bad goals.

“Newcastle are going to be very difficult to beat in their own ground in particular and the manager’s done a great job there.

“But it’s a surprising game football. You can play teams off the pitch and not score, and that’s what happened with Aston Villa.”

Newcastle fans have gone back to the quotes in the wake of Newcastle’s second comfortable win against Villa to make the same joke.

“Looking forward to Ferguson telling us how this Villa home performance is one of the greatest of all time after the game,” one fan wrote on X. “Wonder which team Ferguson reckons has played the best,” another joked.

“Wonder if Ferguson thinks Villa have been the better team tonight?” echoed another.
