The Black Phone 2: Release date, plot, cast & more

Audiences were unnerved by Ethan Hawke’s chilling performance in The Black Phone, and a follow-up is currently in development. Here’s what we know about The Black Phone 2 release date.

The Black Phone was a surprise hit in 2021 and became one of the best horror movies of the year. A psychological, supernatural story, this Blumhouse project was based on a short piece of fiction by Joe Hill, who you may know as the son of Stephen King.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written with C. Robert Cargill, the movie was originally meant to be a one-off story. However, it’s great performance at the box office — making $161 million worldwide against an $18 million budget — and favorable critical reception, makes a sequel too good of an opportunity to miss.

So, what’s happening with the new movie? Here’s what we know about The Black Phone 2.

The Black Phone 2 release date

The Black Phone 2 has been pushed back and will now release on October 17, 2025.

The movie was initially set to hit cinemas on June 27, 2025, but that date was changed in May 2024. As stated by Blumhouse and Universal, the upcoming sequel is the “launch of a new sinister franchise.”

Considering the vibe of the movie, it makes perfect sense to line it up for a release around Halloween next year anyway, so this delay is a good thing!

What will it be about?

There’s no storyline for The Black Phone 2 yet. The plot of the movie is currently under wraps, though we imagine the sequel will cover similar themes and plotlines to the original.

Screenwriter, C. Robert Cargill insisted, “I’m only going to make a Black Phone sequel if we have a really great idea,” so no doubt the plot will be good.

The storyline of the first movie sees Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, held in a soundproof basement by a sadistic, masked killer (Ethan Hawke). However, he is able to communicate with the former victims of his captor via a mysterious telephone on the wall, and finds a way to escape.

Ethan Hawke will return, along with Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora.

With a big chunk of the original cast back for more, it would appear the story of the Grabber will pick up where it left off last time. Obviously, Hawke’s masked character seemed to meet his demise in the climax of the first movie, but we already know there’s a supernatural element at play here.
