Based on the bestselling books by Robyn Carr, Netflix’s Virgin River is beloved, with each new season on the streaming service outranking the last. Mel Monroe, played by Alexandra Breckenridge, is a nurse who moves from LA to the quiet town of Virgin River after a series of personal tragedies.
After the epic cliffhanger in Season 5 Part 2, fans have been hungry for more, with the program’s showrunners teasing what Virgin River Season 6 storylines are coming.
With Seasons 1-5 available to stream on Netflix, here’s what we know about Season 6 of Virgin River.
Is there a Virgin River Season 6 release date?
Since Season 6 is still in production, there’s no release date at the time of writing. Episodes are expected in 2025.
Netflix revealed its 2024 slate earlier this year, and while it would normally feature a new chapter of Virgin River, the show has faced delays due to the now-resolved writers’ and actors’ strikes.
Has Virgin River Season 6 started filming?
Season 6 began filming on February 22, 2024.
Breckenridge and Henderson announced the news on Instagram.

Since filming began, updates on Season 6 have been far and far between, sparking fan complaints.
In lieu of new episodes, a Season 6 video game on the streaming platform was announced under the ‘Netflix Stories’ umbrella.
Who could be in the Virgin River Season 6 cast?
Though no full cast list for Virgin River Season 6 has been released, our two mainstays are back: Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe and Martin Henderson as Jack Sheridan.

Thanks to social media updates, we know that Doc and Hope will be returning, with behind-the-scenes Instagram stories from Tim Matheson showing a preview of Hope’s new desk.
Another actor we can expect to return is John Allen Nelson as Everett, who we found out in Season 5 is actually Mel’s biological father. This is confirmed by the greenlighting of a Virgin River spinoff following his earlier life.
Henderson had fans concerned by recent health scares, though this doesn’t seem to be affecting his role in the show.
The Season 6 plot
The Virgin River showrunners have teased Jack and Mel’s journey to parenthood as a key part of the story.
Patrick Sean Smith told Deadline, “Season 6 will open with the construction of the house and the barn and starting to see in a bigger way what Jack and Mel’s life and future is going to start looking like.”
Speaking about the couple’s miscarriage midway through Season 5, Breckenridge told Tudum in 2022: “I felt like it was an important story to tell. Not everyone gets their miracle baby. And so, talking to a friend of mine who had dealt with fertility issues, it seemed as though we were going to be talking about it in an honest way that would be appreciated by women who have experienced that.
“It was very hard for me, though. There was a lot of crying. It’s a really sad storyline, but in the end, I think Mel comes out of it on the other side in a better way.”
Elsewhere, Season 5 Part 1 ended with the revelation of Lizzie telling Denny that she might be pregnant, news that was confirmed in Part 2. What’s more, they’re having a girl, so we’ll no doubt get to see their pregnancy journey in Season 6.
Then there’s Brie and Mike’s fledgling relationship, as well as Cameron and Muriel. But the romance is second to all of the drama going down, from drug cartels to wildfires, the latter of which uncovered a body, which will likely be Paige’s abusive ex-husband Wes.
What will this mean for the Virgin River residents, especially Preacher, who helped to cover up the evidence? No doubt we’ll find out more in Season 6, with Smith teasing: “He seems justified in what he did. But then there’s the law and then there is Preacher’s moral compass, which is strong. So I think that’s a lot of what we’re getting into with his character.”
The showrunner went on, “We do intend to do another time jump from the holidays to when Season 6 starts so we can anticipate a bit of a time jump. I don’t know exactly how many months but it won’t be a direct pickup from the holidays.”
In the reveal about the prequel spinoff series, Deadline stated that the upcoming Season 6 will also provide a glimpse into Mel’s parents’ past, “featuring young Everett and Sarah in flashbacks.”
Is there a trailer?
Since Season 6 is still in production there’s no new Virgin River trailer yet.
We should get a trailer a few months ahead of the premiere.
Will there be a Virgin River Season 7?
Virgin River Season 7 has yet to be confirmed, but it will likely happen.
Sean Smith told Deadline “There’s no plans of wrapping anything up. I think, as long as these characters are living, there are always going to be stories to tell, and that’s an incredible opportunity for any showrunner.”
Virgin River has performed consistently well for the service, so we’d bet our hats on more to come.
