A recent rumor has suggested that Lionsgate are looking to develop an American Psycho remake, and fans are already slamming the idea alone.

Most on-screen book adaptations would kill to get the American Psycho treatment. When the satirical horror came out in 2002, it catapulted Christian Bale into being a household name and made the character of Patrick Bateman forever iconic.

Shockingly violent and unusually funny, American Psycho is the favorite of many, and fans have grown to be protective of their “perfect” slasher flick.

However, a recent rumor has suggested that Lionsgate are looking to modernize Bateman and his story, and first reactions have already proven that they might want to start rethinking that idea.

Fans are slamming reported American Psycho remake

According to industry insider, @TheInsneider, Lionsgate is currently is currently working towards a modern-day remake of American Psycho.

Allegedly, the studio is seeking ideas on how to remake the 2000 Bret Easton Ellis adaptation (or, technically, 1991 novel). Based on the online reaction to the rumor, it seems fans wouldn’t be happy in the slightest to see this one get an update.

“@Lionsgate, here’s how you “modernize”/”reinvent” American Psycho: YOU DON’T. It’s perfect the way it is. Leave it alone, please,” wrote one X user.

“What an absolute f*cking watered down disaster this would be. Dear Lord,” said another.

One user wrote: “Ughh why aren’t we making original movies? This is baffling. Nobody wants this.”

“How about they don’t? The original is perfect,” another comment said.

It wouldn’t be the first time audiences have slammed an American Psycho-adjacent movie. In 2002, American Psycho 2 (starring Mila Kunis) was released, and was absolutely decimated by fans and critics alike. Of course, this was never intended to be a sequel to the Christian Bale movie — it was later rejigged so it could be considered a follow-up, despite having no original relation.

Still, there’s a lesson to learn. Patrick Bateman fans don’t take kindly to any movie that tries to associate itself with the heavily-praised original, so maybe it’s not worth trying to!
