Every so often, two Disney titans collide to form the ultimate crossover – but did Stitch kill the cast of Recess as a result?

When it comes to instant childhood magic, there’s nowhere that hits quite like the Disney Channel. Better known for Disney Plus output including Percy Jackson and Marvel shows like Echo and She-Hulk in recent years, its cartoon animation ran wild in the early 2000s.

Millennials will be well acquainted with Disney TV shows such as Kim Possible and Phineas and Ferb, alongside epic movies like Treasure Planet and The Emperor’s New Groove.

Two of those titles – Recess and Lilo & Stitch – have just had the anniversary of their crossover, with the homage wording leading some fans to believe there was a more sinister outcome.

Did Stitch kill the cast of Recess?

After a Disney post noting the 18-year anniversary went viral on social media, some fans believe that the wording implies that Stitch killed off the cast of Recess following their crossover.

The original post’s wording reads: “18 years ago today, the ‘LILO & STITCH’ and ‘RECESS’ crossover premiered. The episode marks the last appearance of the ‘Recess’ gang to date.”

Another X/Twitter user replied to the post, stating, “This implies Stitch killed them,” prompting a now-viral debate.

In the crossover episode of the Lilo & Stitch TV series, The Recess gang visits Kauai so Gretchen can use a telescope to examine what she thinks is a new planet. At the same time, an experiment designed to make people stop working zaps Stitch, Jumba, and Pleakley its lazy beam. Lilo is forced to depend on the Recess kids to catch Lax while Stitch takes a vacation.

“You don’t know that. Maybe it was Lilo,” one fan joked, while another added, “Common knowledge for Stitchheads.”

“Does this look like the face of mercy?” another user questioned of a snap of Stitch from the episode, with others agreeing, “The warning signs were there all along.”

However, Stitch potentially being a serial killer on Earth isn’t the only continuity issue that’s come up in the Lilo & Stitch-Recess crossover.

The episode – and wider series – takes place around 2005, though Recess is set during the 1997–1998 school year. Even spin-off movie Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade takes place at the start of the 1998–1999 school year.

“There are four Disney cartoons that had their characters have to grapple with the existential realization that we are not alone in the universe,” one fan added to the thread. Another joined in, “Feel like the Recess kids got the worst of it. They were normal ass kids. Jake Long was a supernatural himself and Penny Proud had experience with Al Roker the evil genie.”
