Peaky Blinders movie: Everything we know
BBCA Peaky Blinders movie will revive the series after massive success on streaming. Here’s what has been announced so far.
The Cillian Murphy drama has dominated streaming services like BBC iPlayer and Netflix over the past decade and hasn’t been off the air long. Season 6 ended Tommy Shelby’s small-screen run on April 3, 2022.
During its tenure, Peaky Blinders enveloped in 1900s Britain, left in a mixture of despair and hedonism in the aftermath of the Great War. It was one of BBC’s best TV shows, winning over a surprisingly broad range of viewers.
Murphy will return, but by order of the Peaky Blinders, let’s go over what else is happening with it.
Is there a Peaky Blinders movie release date?
Peaky Blinders will be filmed in September 2024, but there’s no release date yet.
Robert Viglasky/BBCCreator Steven Knight confirmed the news to BirminghamWorld at the premiere of his new show This Town in March 2024, stating, “He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.”
Two Peaky Blinderspin-off series have been announced at Netflix too, though they are further behind in development.
Who’s in the film’s cast?
Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the Peaky Blinders movie. A full list hasn’t been announced.
BBCWhile some of the original cast will return, Knight told Radio Times, “There are so many people, so many great actors, that we are already sort of in conversation with for the film, and for whatever follows. But I think what we want to do is keep surprising people and keep breaking new talent.
Because it’s all out there, and there is a sort of consistency — what we’re doing is finding really good actors from a working class sort of background and telling that story.”
Peaky Blinders has helped launch a few careers, with actors like Josh O’Connor (Challengers, God’s Own Country) appearing in guest roles before booming in Hollywood. So, it makes sense Knight wants to give up-and-comers opportunities.
This commitment is precious following a May 2024 Channel 4 report which revealed working class creatives in film and TV are at the lowest level in a decade.
What could the plot of the Peaky Blinders movie be?
A plot synopsis hasn’t been shared. But the movie will be set during World War II and integrate “true stories“.
Robert Viglasky/BBCKnight shared, “I’ve had this in mind for a while, a story with the Peakys during World War II. And I’ve picked up three true stories I’m integrating into the film. True, secret, and unknown stories about the Second World War, and [I’ve] involved the Peaky’s in there.
With the Second World War, there was so much going on and so much death and destruction. Lots of things happened that didn’t make it into the history books. So it’s those things I’m focusing on.”
Knight said he hopes to “redeem” Tommy, too. “My intention has always been to redeem him so that, in the end, he’s genuinely a good man doing good things.
Finding how that journey happened, and why, and dealing with all the post-traumatic stress of the First World War, and never easing up on that.”
Is there a trailer?
There’s no movie trailer yet. Peaky Blinders begins shooting in September 2024.
