The Legend of Vox Machina classes

The Legend of Vox Machina brought one of the most beloved adventuring parties to Prime Video. Here are all their classes explained so you know more about these intrepid characters.

Adapted from Campaign One of the Dungeons and Dragons actual-play show Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina brought treasured characters and storylines to the small screen.

Matt Mercer‘s masterful DMing and Critical Role’s vibrant playable characters didn’t disappoint when the cast transitioned from table to streaming service.

With The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 on the way, let’s go over the party’s classes and character backgrounds. How do you want to do this?

Percy de Rolo

Percy class The Legend of Vox Machina
  • Race: Human
  • Class: Fighter (Gunslinger)

Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III, otherwise known as Percy, is a human fighter, using the Gunslinger archetype.

When the first episodes of the Critical Role show came out, a Gunslinger archetype didn’t exist in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition. So, Percy was a Pathfinder class Taliesin Jaffe and Mercer adapted for their campaign. However, it’s now a fully-fledged subclass for anyone to enjoy.

The role of a fighter in a group is to deal lots of damage quickly. They get multiple attacks and Gunslingers can do ‘called shots’, as Percy did in many episodes of Critical Role. Namely, shooting off hands or making opponents drop their weapons. In D&D 5E, it feels like Percy leans more towards Artificer with his engineering skills and intelligence, but that wasn’t a class when his character was created.

Vex’ahlia

Vex The Legend of Vox Machina
  • Race: Half-elf
  • Class: Ranger/Rogue

The charismatic and expert haggler Vex’ahlia, nicknamed Vex, is a half-elven Ranger at the beginning of Season 1 of The Legend of Vox Machina, dipping into Rogue later in the show after learning some tricks from her twin brother.

In typical Ranger style, Vex uses a bow, has an adorable bear companion, is extremely in tune with nature, and can sense a certain enemy’s approach. We saw all this on display when The Chroma Conclave descended on Emon, setting up The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2.

Rangers use long-range weapons, are great for nature rolls, and are usually seen with an animal familiar — although they’re not typically as large as Trinket.

She’s voiced by Laura Bailey, who has been in a million things but is particularly amazing as Abby in The Last of Us 2.

Vax’ildan

Vax The Legend of Vox Machina
  • Race: Half-Elf
  • Class: Rogue/Paladin

The twin brother of Vex’ahlia is the shy yet deadly Vax’ildan, known for his thieving skills, throwing knives, and ability to seamlessly disappear into the shadows. Played by Liam O’Brien, he’s a half-elven Rogue, multiclassing into Paladin later on.

Rogues are the stealth class of Dungeons and Dragons, focusing primarily on dealing high damage and then getting out of dodge before the enemy has a chance to land a hit. As for Paladins, they are holy avengers, fighting evil in the name of a God, much like a cleric.

Paladins don’t need to run away from anything or anyone. This isn’t a multi-class route you see often, but you’ll see why Vax ends up one after he gets involved with the Matron of Ravens.

Keyleth

Keyleth The Legend of Vox machina
  • Race: Half-Elf
  • Class: Druid

Marisha Ray’s lovably awkward Keyleth is an uncharismatic half-elven Druid who is powerful beyond belief — after she learns how to harness it. Like Vex, Keyleth is in tune with nature, with the majority of her spells harnessing the power of the elements or the world around her.

Druids are extremely powerful, with the ability to cast a vast array of spells and wildshape into different animals. They are typically extremely wise and will often live for centuries when they become arch-Druids, which can be achieved by reaching level 20 in D&D.

Keyleth is one of the most powerful PC’s Critical Role has ever seen, and her well-meaning personality is charming. She is also present in much of Campain 3, so if Bell’s Hells is eventually adapted, you’ll see her in it.

Grog

Grog The legend of Vox Machina
  • Race: Goliath
  • Class: Barbarian/Fighter

The lovable giant Grog (Travis Willingham) is a man of little brain but an unbelievably big heart, and muscles. He’s a goliath Barbarian who dips into the Fighter class later on in the show.

Despite being easily the strongest member of Vox Machina, he is often underestimated because of his lack of intelligence, although that does make for some hilarious comedic relief.

Barbarians are prone to rage but are filled with fight and brawn, often preferring to settle matters with their fists rather than their brains or their mouths. They hit harder than any class in the game and are typically the tanks of the team, often having a pool of health larger than anyone else.

Pike

Pike The legend of Vox Machina
  • Race: Gnome
  • Class: Cleric

Grog’s best friend Pike is a caring, lovable, and sweet character. She’s a gnome Cleric who worships the goddess Sarenrae, known for being the god of redemption, healing, and temperance.

Clerics are healers, using the power of their faith to destroy enemies and cure friends. Just like Pike, Clerics are hardy, deadly, and essential, especially when going up against towns of undead like in Season 1.

With BAFTA-winner Ashley Johnson bringing her to life, Pike is often the sentimental one of the group and displays a lot of care for the party.

Scanlan

Scanlan The legend of Vox Machina
  • Race: Gnome
  • Class: Bard

Lastly is Sam Riegel’s Scanlan. He is a gnome Bard build, and known for doing what most typical bards do: using their charm to get “lady favors,” and whatever else they can get a hold of.

Bards are charismatic characters who use the power of song or simply words to cast spells and convince, intimidate, or deceive those around them.

They, like Druids, often act as the support for the party, stopping deadly spells, casting boons like Bardic Inspiration, and dealing fatal blows on powerful enemies.
