The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will bring these two characters back into focus, giving fans a chance to learn what happened to Rick and Michonne after their tragic separation in the main series.

But with so many shows occupying The Walking Dead’s world, prospective viewers will want to know exactly where this one lands in the timeline. Here’s what you need to know about when The Ones Who Live takes place.

When does The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live take place?

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live mainly takes place during the years following The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 5, ‘What Comes After’.

When viewers last saw Rick and Michonne, Rick was rescued by the CRM (Civic Republic Military) after the bridge explosion (and appeared to be attempting an escape), and Michonne was on a quest to track him down.

The promos for the new series don’t give too much away, but The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will likely explore what happened to Rick in those years following his disappearance, as well as catching up with Michonne over a year into her travels, which is where the main series ended.

The new series will also most likely follow the characters as their timelines sync together, which would be at least seven years since they were last together.

Of course, there’s no ruling out any flashbacks to the main TWD era, either. The Ones Who Live will be an epic love story between Rick and Michonne, so it’s very possible that viewers will be dipping in and out of their shared past (and perhaps even their future).
