Baldur’s Gate 3 fanfic writers have a favorite companion and it’s not even close

Baldur's Gate 3 party on a mountain

The majority of all fan fiction about Baldur’s Gate 3 focuses on just one of the companions in the game, despite them all being relatively popular.

One of the most remarkable things Baldur’s Gate managed to achieve was juggling the stories and character arcs of several vastly different personalities throughout its three-act narrative.

No matter who your favorite companion is, there’s a decent chance that any one of the party members you pick up along the way could be someone else’s favorite. Unless it’s Halsin.

Still, it looks like that broad appeal hasn’t carried over to the fanfiction community, because half of all the stories written about Baldur’s Gate feature one very special vampire.

Astarion features in half of all Baldur’s Gate fanfiction

One person on the official Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit crunched the numbers and discovered that out of all 6108 Baldur’s Gate fanfics on the popular site Archive of Our Own, 2815 of them featured Astarion, making him present in just under 50% of the stories.

Maybe there’s just something about the way he talks, or something about writers and vampires that brings them back to the good old days of Twilight fanfiction, but Astarion takes the top spot among the writing community for Baldur’s Gate. And to be fair, we can’t see someone being as dedicated about Halsin.

As one player sarcastically put it: ” I’m surprised to see the dramatic bi vampire tops the lists.”

Strangely, this trend doesn’t map onto the actual game itself, as Larian Studios have confirmed that the most romanced characters in the game are Gale and Shadowheart. Maybe all the vampire lovers are too busy writing Astarion x OC fan fiction to actually play the game.
