Southampton’s Championship clash with Preston North End has been postponed after a huge fire broke out near St Mary’s Stadium hours ahead of kick-off.

A large plume of smoke was seen coming from a series of industrial units on Marine Parade – close to the club’s football stadium.

Firefighters have been tackling the blaze as emergency services have placed a cordon around the area.

The fire broke out shortly after 1pm GMT (8am ET, 5am PT) and residents have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to the volume of smoke.

Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, were due to be in action against Preston North End on Wednesday night.

The Championship clash was meant to kick-off at St Mary’s at 7:45pm GMT (2:45pm ET, 11:45am PT), just hours after the fire was first reported.

Official Statement on Southampton vs Preston

A decision has now been taken to postpone Wednesday night’s game against Preston.

An official statement from Southampton said: “Southampton Football Club regrets to announce that tonight’s Sky Bet Championship match against Preston North End has been postponed.

“The decision was made after consultation with the local authorities and emergency services after a major fire broke out in a building next to the St Mary’s Stadium site earlier today.

“The incident has caused significant disruption in the area with road closures around the stadium still in place as fire crews continue to deal with the situation.

“We are grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, and while we appreciate the disappointment fans may feel, we hope they will understand the need to put the safety of supporters and staff of both clubs first.

“The game will be postponed to a new date, which will be announced in due course, and all tickets for tonight’s match will be valid for the rearranged fixture.”
