A dog, specifically a Shiba Inu named Peanut Butter, has completed a speedrun of Gyromite on the Games Done Quick live stream.

Games Done Quick is a multi-day charity livestream that features hundreds of gamers speedrunning their favorite games with various restrictions and rules. Gamers sometimes come in and speedrun titles with a blindfold on, other times they play through the run by using their feet.

The charity event has been ongoing for years and the 2024 edition has featured the first speedrun done by a non-human. Peanut Butter the dog completed a speedrun for the event with thousands watching.

The dog’s owner, speedrunner JSR, announced in 2023 that his dog would be featured on the charity stream playing the 1985 Nintendo puzzle-action game Gyromite.

Peanut Butter competed in the speedrun using a custom controller that he places his paws on to open and close gates and move platforms in-game, all while following the commands of JSR.

JSR said in the 2023 announcement that it took years of training for Peanut Better to be able to do the run with the controller.

Peanut Butter completed the game in just over 26 minutes and saw massive engagement from the speedrunning community and the wider gaming landscape, according to the GDQ social media page.

The dog was praised by his owner once the run was completed and saw him consume dozens of treats while controlling his in-game character to safety. Peanut Butter and JSR did the run at home and did not make the trip to Pittsburgh to play in front of an audience.

JSR is a speedrunner himself and will be doing a run of the NES game Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse later on in the event.
