Masterful takedowns can be the key to a successful career in the UFC, and it’s no different when it comes to the UFC 5 video game. Here’s our comprehensive guide on how to take down your opponent and get the fight to the mat.

UFC 5 brings a ton of fresh new features and mechanics for players in this latest installment. However, one element of the game that remains almost the same is taking down your opponent.

While the takedown mechanics should be somewhat familiar to players of UFC 4, understanding the updated control scheme is crucial for anyone looking to dominate on the ground in UFC 5.

Whether you want to take your opponent down to unleash devastating ground and pound or simply try to submit them with the revamped submission system, here’s how to take down an opponent in UFC 5.

How to takedown in UFC 5

Single-Leg Takedown

  • L2 + Square + X (PlayStation), LT + X + A (Xbox)

The single-leg takedown is available to most fighters and is a fundamental technique for bringing the fight to the ground.

Double-Leg Takedown

  • L2 + Triangle + Circle (PlayStation), LT + Y + B (Xbox)

Like the single-leg takedown, this is a basic yet effective move for initiating ground combat.

Takedown Drives

  • Move the left stick up or down to continue your takedown drive

If your opponent denies your takedown attempt late, you will enter a takedown drive. Use the left stick to push forward and change the direction of your takedown.

Clinch takedowns

  • R1 + X or Circle (PlayStation), RB + A or B (Xbox)

From a dominant position in the clinch, you can trip or throw your opponent to the mat. Your fighter must have the necessary moves in their arsenal, however.

Mastering the art of the takedown in UFC 5 requires an understanding of the updated control scheme and an understanding of when to initiate the takedowns. Of course, every fighter has their own takedown skill and abilities, as well.

By practicing these takedowns, you’ll be able to control the pace of the fight, dominate on the ground, and secure victory in the Octagon.
