Overwatch 2 players are divided over some of the game’s recent collaborations, which saw Blizzard team up with Cowboy Bebop and, bizarrely, Porsche.

Collaborations in the gaming space have become one of the most reliable ways to drum up hype and make some best-selling skins. Pioneered by the rampant success of Fortnite, Overwatch, and other live-service games quickly followed suit.

Last year, Overwatch launched a collab with One Punch, with skins that were generally well-received by the player base. But now, the collabs are ramping up in frequency, and while there are still ones coming out with fan-favorite IPs, some of the choices have the community scratching their heads.

Overwatch 2 players conflicted by Porsche collab skins

The announcement of a Cowboy Bebop collab was immediately met with largely positive reactions, with many players describing it as a perfect fit for the game and the heroes the skins were picked for. It seems like anime crossovers are the safest bet for Overwatch 2 audiences.

However, the announcement of a Porsche collab was met with a much more lukewarm response.

“It’s the Fortnite-ifcation of gaming,” one player said. “Everyone everywhere is doing crossovers/collabs. Even long-time brands such as Magic: The Gathering are addicted to it now. They’ve already done LoTR, Dr Who, Fallout, and 40K. It’s only a matter of time before Overwatch gets these too.

“Crossovers are BIG money. The previous collab skins probably made them way more money than random shop skins ever do. Expect collaborations to ramp up exponentially over the next 1-2 years.”

Another player said: “The (something) x (something) “collab” fad is so awful because it’s across all media. Music industry addicted to it right now.

“Fortnite and their crossovers felt like big celebrations while Overwatch bring the energy of a low fart with expensive skins. ”
