Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker had to learn the hard way not to make promises on social media he would ultimately have to keep.

Back in 2016, when Leicester City defied the odds to win the Premier League title, Lineker had joked midway through the season that he would present the first Match of the Day of the following season in his underwear.

Sure enough, Leicester fan Lineker stuck to his promise – much to the amusement of fellow panelists Alan Shearer and Ian Wright.

Lineker won’t offer humiliating Leicester City title repeat

Leicester’s title win sparked a golden era in the Foxes history that saw them reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, semi-finals of the UEFA Conference League and win both the FA Cup and Community Shield.

But things came crashing back down last season when they were unexpectedly relegated from the Premier League – ending an unprecedented era of success.

That being said, they are back on the rise this term under new manager Enzo Maresca and are currently nine points clear at the top of the Championship table.

With Leicester on course to win another title and promotion back to the Premier League, Lineker was asked during a recent Reddit Q&A session whether he would present the first episode of next season’s Match of the Day in another embarrassing fashion.

One fan asked: “If Leicester win the Championship, will you present MOTD in just a mankini?”

“No! I wouldn’t inflict that on anyone,” Lineker replied. “It’s getting almost ten years on since then I’m, you know, getting an old man now. That would be a grisly sight for you all.”
