A video shared by a woman online in which she showed how she made a $77.54 profit from selling Goodwill clothes to Plato’s Closet, has divided the internet over whether the practice was ethical.

Goodwill is a great place to pick up some comfy second-hand clothes for those looking to save money, rather than the hefty brand-new price tags of some brands.

Even if they can afford the brand-new price tags of luxury brands, some people still go to Goodwill for the fun of trying to find bargain deals or the wholesome feeling of saving the planet by recycling old clothes.

It is hard not to like Goodwill – even if some strange events happen at some stores like when an employee refuses to sell an item.

However, people were upset at one woman for a TikTok she made about Goodwill and felt she was exploiting the store.

Viewers upset with Goodwill reselling and worry prices will go up

One woman shared a video of her explaining the process of buying clothes from Goodwill and making a profit selling them to Plato’s Closet.

“Reselling clothes from the goodwill bins at Plato’s closet is a low-risk way to make some profit,” she captioned the video.

She explained in the video that Plato’s Closet took nearly everything that she bought from the Goodwill bins, leaving her with a handsome profit: “In general, it looked like they took everything that I had bought from the [Goodwill] bin […] that is $77.54 of profit”.

Some people were surprised by the person’s craftiness but wished that they hadn’t spread the message about the bang-for-your-buck nature of Goodwill bins. “Bin goodwills are rare don’t give away the secrets,” said one person.

Other people were genuinely irate at the post, however, and complained that Goodwill clothes are for those who can’t afford to buy new items, not for people to make a profit on. “[This is] why I cut my tags out when I donate stuff. It’s meant for people who can’t afford the mall!”

Another person worried that Goodwill might raise their prices if reselling became a trend. “Lady! I have to shop at Goodwill! if you put this out there Goodwill are gonna raise their prices!” they said.
