The greatest Game of Thrones story is becoming a TV show

The most significant, cataclysmic event in Westeros history will be brought to life in a new Game of Thrones spinoff.

George R.R. Martin’s world of ice and fire is enormous in scope, spanning hundreds – if not thousands – of years across cycles of treachery, violence, a fair bit of incest, and dragonflame.

So far, the author’s works have been adapted twice by HBO in Game of Thrones, a pop-culture-redefining television titan that poisoned its legacy with a disastrous final season, and House of the Dragon, a prequel that somehow reinvigorated the franchise and restored fans’ faith.

The Dance of the Dragons will return to our screens this summer in all of its vengeance-fuelled glory – but you should be very excited about another show in the works.

Game of Thrones is getting an Aegon’s Conquest spinoff

A spinoff chronicling Aegon’s Conquest, an event that established Westeros’ seven kingdoms and the notorious rule of the Targaryens, is in development at HBO.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the show is set to be written by Mattson Tomlin, who helped pen The Batman and is currently co-writing its sequel with Matt Reeves. He’s also the showrunner for Netflix’s Terminator anime series.

The Targaryen at the center of the conquest is Aegon I, not just the house’s first king, but the first person to ever sit on the Iron Throne and take the title of Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. It was a two-year campaign to conquer and unify Westeros, coming after the chaos and unrest of the Century of Blood.

The optics of the conquest have also been reframed rather dramatically after House of the Dragon. It was once believed his mission stemmed from a conflict with Storm King Agilac – but that wasn’t necessarily the case. According to King Viserys, Aegon “foresaw the end of the world of men. It is to begin with a terrible winter, gusting out of the distant North. Aegon saw absolute darkness riding on those winds and whatever dwells within will destroy the world of the living … if the world of men is to survive, a Targaryen must be seated on the Iron Throne.”

Reports of HBO considering the spinoff first emerged last year, but no writer was attached at the time. Ryan Condal, who helms House of the Dragon, also teased he’d be interested in adapting Aegon’s Conquest.

It’s unclear who’d play Aegon (although fans know who they’d want), nor do we have any further information about the series right now.
