A Subway shop has closed its doors after charging a woman over $1K for a sandwich and refusing to refund her for the exorbitant cost.

Subway is a prominent American fast-food chain specializing in submarine-style sandwiches that customers can assemble to their specific tastes.

The chain became famous for its “five-dollar footlong” sandwiches in the mid 2000s, but has since phased out that particular promotion. That being said, Subway is still known for its low prices and relatively healthy fare in comparison to other fast-food joints like McDonald’s.

However, one woman was left shell shocked after discovering the amount she was charged for a single sandwich… and she’s still struggling to get her money back.

Subway store closes doors after charging woman $1K for sandwich

Letitia Bishop ordered two sandwiches from a Subway inside a Thorntons gas station in Columbus, Ohio in January 2024 — one of which cost her a jaw-dropping $1,010.

It wasn’t until she’d already left the shop that she noticed the eye-popping charge on her account. Bishop went back to the Subway location and brought up the discrepancy with staff, who told her to contact corporate.

Bishop claims that “there’s no phone number that leads to a live person” and has been struggling to get a refund ever since the charge went through. She’s also alerted her bank to the massive charge — but they haven’t offered any help, either.

“I’m just trying to make ends meet at this point,” Bishop said in a statement to ABC 6. “I couldn’t get groceries at one point because my account was negative.”

That’s not all; Bishop also went back to the store again to get more answers, but found the location had closed. Its online listing also shows that it is temporarily closed.

Experts say that Bishop could look into legal action against the shop, with the Better Business Bureau’s Lee Anne Lanigan claiming the charge may be considered theft.

“She could take that to her bank and say, ‘Here’s my receipt, and here’s where you gave them a thousand dollars. If you can’t make this right for me, I’m willing to file a fraud affidavit,'” Lanigan said per ABC 6.

This isn’t the first time Subway has charged customers thousands of dollars for its sandwiches. In November 2023, a woman was charged $7,000 for a footlong in a kerfuffle that went viral online.
