Sunderland ’til I die: What happened to Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven?

Sunderland ‘Til I Die returned to our screens this week with a three-part third season charting the club’s successful 2022 promotion push.

The much-loved series captured the attention of football fans around the globe with its first two seasons, released in 2018 and 2020, but plenty of time has passed between seasons two and three, with a lot of key people at the club either operating in a reduced capacity or having left all together.

Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven featured prominently in season two following their takeover of the club in 2018, but are only briefly visible in the new instalment.

What happened to Sunderland’s owners from season two?

Donald was the majority shareholder at Sunderland between 2018 and 2021, when Kyril Louis-Dreyfus became chairman and controlling shareholder.

Donald had been trying to sell Sunderland since 2019 and last year he sold his remaining shares to fully end his involvement with the club.

The 49-year-old now owns National League side Eastleigh, who he previously sold in 2018 in order to complete his takeover of Sunderland.

Methven is also no longer involved with Sunderland. He is, however, still in football after his firm SE7 Partners bought League One club Charlton Athletic last year.
