Insomniac Games put out a statement about the SIE and PlayStation Studio layoffs and fans of the Spider-Man video game franchise makers have rallied around the studio.

Insomniac is one of the more celebrated studios in the modern video game era. The developer started in the 90s creating Spyro and moved to Ratchet & Clank before being tapped to create Marvel’s Spider-Man.

The 2018 Spider-Man game was a massive hit for Insomniac and Sony, which later became the developer’s parent company. The game’s success spawned a remastered version, a standalone spin-off starring Miles Morales, and a sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

These successes did not stop Insomniac from being caught up in the Sony layoffs on February 27, 2024. Fans of the studio’s games have rallied around the company online, trashing Sony for releasing workers on their favorite title.

Fan’s rally around Insomniac Games

Insomniac released a statement on social media on February 28 addressing the reports of layoffs on its team, saying “there are no sufficient words to express our feelings about it.”

Fans of the studio’s work quickly came to its defense as Sony slashed 900 jobs across its PlayStation gaming division.

“Insomniac has been carrying PS this generation and this is the thanks they get,” one fan wrote on social media.

Others pointed out how the studio helped generate millions of dollars of sales for Sony and still got hit with a staff reduction. Sony reportedly laid off about 8% of its gaming sector as a whole.

“Actually insane that you can sell over 10 million copies of your latest game and still be laid off. F*** this industry, man,” another fan said.

How the layoffs will impact future game development at the studio, like the currently in-progress Wolverine game, has yet to be revealed. The job cuts have caused some Sony titles to be outright cancelled.
