Both the RTX 4070 and 4070 Super are well-performing graphics cards. But, since their prices are so close together, we’ve gone head-to-head with the RTX 4070 vs the RTX 4070 Super.

The RTX 4070 Super has finally landed, but should you pick up one of these mighty new Nvidia GPUs, or save a few bucks and go with an original 4070, instead? We dive deep into the numbers across a range of resolutions to tell you which one offers you the best value.

With the RTX 4070 Super and RTX 4070 both still available on the market, both graphics cards offer nearly identical features, and one comes in slightly cheaper, you might be scratching your head about the differences between the two cards. While they are both powerful, crucial performance differences could make or break your next big PC build.

The specifications for both GPUs reveal that both are incredibly similar, they both use very slightly tweaked versions of Nvidia’s AD104 chip, which is why we’re limited to 12GB of GDDR6X RAM on the die’s 192-bit bus. Base clocks and CUDA core counts are also slightly higher with the 4070 Super, with the newer GPU offering 20% more CUDA cores, but at the cost of a slightly increased TGP. But, at just $50 more, the RTX 4070 Super offers better value, at least on paper.

The RTX 4070 Super also offers a wider 48MB cache, whereas the standard RTX 4070 is sitting at 36MB. This could mean that the Super variant of the GPU could perform slightly better in scenarios where you’re utilizing heaps of VRAM.

RTX 4070 Super vs RTX 4070: Price

The RTX 4070 is just $549, while the RTX 4070 Super is $599. When the RTX 4070 Super was announced, the original RTX 4070 had its price cut by around $50. However, these MSRPs are for base models only. Many AIB partners can choose to mark up the GPUs with factory overclocks, or bigger thermal solutions.

However, for the cost here, paying an extra $50 for a CUDA core count that hurtles up by 20% doesn’t seem like too bad an idea. On the inverse, the RTX 4070 is still a great card, and you might even find it on sale at certain retailers.

RTX 4070 Super vs 4070: Performance

The RTX 4070 Super is faster than the RTX 4070 by an average of 14% across all of our benchmarks. The GPUs were tested in systems that offer a performance difference within a slim margin of error. However, it’s clear to see that the RTX 4070 Super is the faster card of the two, which will offer higher framerates across almost all titles and resolutions.

Both graphics cards can offer high-framerate gameplay at above 100 FPS at 1440p, which is where both GPUs will shine. However, it appears that the Super variant’s higher CUDA count puts in the work here, offering up better framerates in taxing loads, such as Cyberpunk 2077, despite both GPUs having access to the DLSS 3 feature.

The RTX 4070 and 4070 Super also perform well at 4K, despite not being marketed as such. However, in more intensive titles, you might start to run into a VRAM limitation in modern Unreal Engine 5 titles, and other next-gen game engines.

RTX 4070 Super vs RTX 4070: Which one should you buy?

The RTX 4070 Super offers 14% more performance, for just an 8% increase in price. While the specifications for both graphics cards are incredibly similar, the 4070 Super essentially replaces the 4070 as Nvidia is only keeping the original card around to presumably sell off excess stock.

Given that the RTX 4070 is the most popular GPU from the 40-series stack, the 4070 Super offers stronger performance all-round, and will potentially make your money go further, especially if you are looking at building a new rig for years to come. Equally, if you have an RTX 4070 and have been using it before the Super GPU was announced, then a 14% performance difference is no reason to lose sleep, the standard RTX 4070 is still a great GPU.
