Disney fans think Wish concept art is better than the movie
DisneyDisney’s Wish may have some fantastic artwork, but now fans are claiming that this concept art could have actually made a better movie.
Disney’s new animated movie Wish seems to not be the film to set your dreams upon. Not only is the film still battling with the likes of Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes at the box office, it’s also been rather panned critically.
However, this does not mean that people were not originally hyped for the film. Die-hard Disney and animation fans have constantly been discussing the movie on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter).
But it turns out that this discussion involves the movie’s original concept art, which many are considering to be better than the final product – or at least, it promises a better product.
Wish fans wish for what could have been in the concept art
Wish follows this synopsis: “Young Asha makes a wish so powerful that it’s answered by a cosmic force, a little ball of boundless energy called Star. With Star’s help, Asha must save her kingdom from King Magnifico and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.”
The movie, which hit cinemas on November 22, has since scored only 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus being “Wish earns some tugs at the heartstrings with the way it warmly references many of the studio’s classics, but nostalgia’s no substitute for genuine storytelling magic – no matter how beautifully animated it might be.”
But the movie has recently begun making the rounds on social media, mainly because people have discovered the movie’s original concept art. This art, which helps span out the world and characters of the movie, depicted some ideas that never made it into the final film.
This includes an evil couple, a more 2D art style, and a romance between Asha and the star, who was actually a magical boy. Because of these revelations, audiences are now lamenting what could have been.
One user stated, “They had all the cards for a great movie but fumbled so hard. Get rid of the whole talking goat concept and have sweet starboy be her sidekick instead. Also like, evil couple concept??? I wish this is what was actually produced and not just in this art book” and many seemed to agree.
Some posters have even gone on to say that Wish is reflecting Disney’s flawed business model as a whole: “Wish concept art proves that the problem isn’t that Disney doesn’t have creative people. It’s that corporate Disney chews up creativity, digests it and spits it out as safe generic proven pandering mush” said one.
“Disney is holding itself back for marketability. I see concept art from Wish, Raya and Frozen that look absolutely amazing/implies some interesting concepts but get scrapped for something that can be more easily made into a plush or doll or smth” posted another.
