Happy Gilmore 2: Everything we know

Adam Sandler as Happy in Happy Gillmore

Happy Gilmore 2 is officially happening! We’ve got all the latest information on the potential release date, who’ll be teeing up with Adam Sandler this time, and what the story might entail.

That’s right, one of the very best Adam Sandler movies will get a sequel, almost 30 years later. Happy Gilmore 2 has got the greenlight, with Netflix continuing its working relationship with the comedy man to bring this new movie to life.

Sandler has long talked about his hopes of revisiting the incredible sports movie for another story, and now he (and fans) can truly begin to get excited.

With Happy Gilmore 2 confirmed, here’s everything we know so far, and a few ideas we’d like to see happen, too.

Is there a Happy Gilmore 2 release date?

Happy Gilmore 2 doesn’t have a release date right now.

On Dan Patrick’s show, Sandler confirmed the movie is in the works with writer Tim Herlihy. Shooter McGavin actor, Christopher McDonald, revealed he had been sent the script and described it as “awesome.”

Netflix has already announced Happy Gilmore 2 will release on the streaming service, but it is still unclear when exactly. If we were to make an educated guess, we’d have the film down for 2026, given the script may still need some tweaks and then taking into account the production process.

What is Happy Gilmore 2 about?

There are no official plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 right now, as the project is still in early development.

Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore

The first movie ended on a positive note with no real loose ends to address. Happy managed to win the Tour Championship and beat Shooter, he got the girl, and he saved his grandmother’s home.

What we do know is, it’s very likely Happy and Shooter will face off once more in some capacity. In fact, fans of the first movie have some ideas about that, and they involve the next generation of the Gilmore family.

Over on Reddit, fans speculated that it would be fun to see Gilmore’s daughter (played by Sandler’s real-life daughter) become an LPGA Tour pro, and for Shooter’s daughter to be her main rival.

Even funnier, would be if Gilmore’s daughter were to struggle with golf and turn her hand to hockey instead, and become a sensation in that sport due to inheriting her father’s lucky swing. The catch is, Shooter McGavin raised his daughter to play hockey instead of golf, and then ends up being usurped by a Gilmore once more.

It remains to be seen whether the storyline will focus on Sandler’s character entirely, or if he will try and hand the baton over to a younger cast.

Who’s in the Happy Gilmore 2 cast?

The only person we know for sure will be in the cast is Adam Sandler as the titular character.

Julie Bowen and Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore

Sandler has not confirmed if anyone from the original cast is returning for the sequel yet. Still, the fact that Christopher McDonald was sent the script suggests he will have some part to play as Shooter McGavin.

Other actors, such as Julie Bowen, remain unclear at this time. She previously starred as Virgina, the public relations agent in charge of the tour. Her character falls in love with Happy and they stay together by the movie’s ending. Happy Gilmore 2 could bring back the character as Happy’s wife (or ex-wife, for more drama).

Other stars, such as Carl Weathers, Richard Kiel, and Bob Barker, have since died. Weathers played Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, the pro golfer who lost his hand to an alligator and trained Happy. Kiel played the role of Mr. Larson, Happy’s former employee.

Fans can only hope that Sandler pays homage to Frances Bay, who played Happy’s loving grandmother. The actor died in 2011 at the age of 92.

One professional golfer who has been heavily hinted at for a role is Paige Spiranac. The golf influencer has had fans crying out for her to get a part in the movie, and she even teased she is ready to get involved, too.

Is there a trailer?

There’s no official trailer for Happy Gilmore 2.

It’s far too early in the development process for fans to get a sneak peek of the sequel, sadly.
