The Mandalorian & Grogu movie announced for cinemas

Lucasfilm just unveiled a new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni.

This reflects the studio’s renewed focus on its slate of big-screen Star Wars productions, following a multi-year lull in the wake of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s 2019 release.

Other films set in a galaxy far, far away currently in development include projects helmed by Logan’s James Mangold and Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Mangold’s movie will explore the origins of the Jedi Order, whereas Obaid-Chinoy’s will chart the exploits of Daisy Ridley’s Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.

Filoni was also named as the director of an unnamed Star Wars movie alongside Mangold and Obaid-Chinoy in April 2023. Presumably, that flick and The Mandalorian & Grogu are one and the same, although this remains unclear for now.

Either way, The Mandalorian & Grogu will continue the story started in Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Filoni is also one of that show’s executive producers and played a key role in developing it alongside creator Jon Favreau.

The Mandalorian and Grogu are headed to the big screen.

According to Lucasfilm’s post on StarWars.com, The Mandalorian & Grogu will enter production at some point in 2024. The studio didn’t supply any further details about the project’s plot and characters, aside from the involvement of Din Djarin/The Mandalorian and his adopted son, Grogu.

It’s currently unclear at this stage if The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal will reprise the Din Djarin role in The Mandalorian & Grogu. The Chilean-American actor – whose performance is largely voice-only – isn’t mentioned in Lucasfilm’s announcement.

There’s likewise no word on when the Mandalorian & Grogu will arrive in cinemas. All we know for certain is that the production will “lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate,” suggesting it will arrive before Mangold or Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars flicks.

Lucasfilm confirms Ahsoka Season 2 is on the way

Lucasfilm’s announcement included another, Mandalorian-adjacent nugget of Star Wars information, too. Buried away at the bottom was confirmation that Filoni is currently working on Ahsoka Season 2 – the studio’s first official indication that a second batch of episodes is definitely happening.

Ahsoka Season 1 wrapped up with several key narrative threads still unresolved, sparking speculation of a second season. Filoni acknowledged this in a November 2023 interview, admitting that Ahsoka’s creative team was in “a wait-and-see pattern” following the untimely death of key cast member Ray Stevenson.
