Kate Winslet has divulged why she chose to steer clear from blockbuster films after starring in the genre defining Titanic.

James Cameron’s Titanic is, still to this day, in the top five grossing movies of all time despite premiering almost 30 years ago.

The film has only grown in popularity throughout the years and helped launch the careers of its cast, most notably its leads Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

However, while DiCaprio continues to star in blockbuster films, Winslet has chosen to work on smaller projects and recently revealed the truly heartbreaking reason behind her decision.

Winslet’s Titanic fame was too much to handle

While chatting with Net-A-Porter about her upcoming biopic Lee, Winslet recalled being overwhelmed by the amount of fame and attention Titanic brought her when she was just 22 years old.

“I felt like I had to look a certain way, or be a certain thing, and because media intrusion was so significant at that time, my life was quite unpleasant,” Winslet said.

“Journalists would always say, ‘After Titanic, you could have done anything and yet you chose to do these small things’… and I was like, ‘Yeah, you bet your f*ckin’ life I did! Because, guess what, being famous was horrible.’ I was grateful, of course. I was in my early twenties, and I was able to get a flat. But I didn’t want to be followed literally feeding the ducks.”

Winslet went on to explain that she wears the badge of being famous “very light,” but she doesn’t feel a burden by it anymore as “[Titanic] continues to bring people huge amounts of joy. The only time I am like, ‘Oh god, hide’, is if we are on a boat somewhere.”

The actress also noted that she has no regrets in her acting career since Titanic as she “just [doesn’t] think like that” and feels grateful she can work on smaller projects like Mare of Easttown, Ammonite, and the upcoming Lee.
