Is The Little Mermaid live-action remake streaming? The Disney movie had a successful run at the box office, but for those wanting to watch it at home, here’s when to expect it to drop on Disney Plus.

The House of Mouse produced its first live-action do-over with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, a critical flop that somehow became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time and spawned its own sequel.

Since then, Disney has gone full steam ahead on giving its beloved library a fresh, photo-realistic lick of paint with the likes of Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Mulan, and Aladdin.

The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, is the latest remake to arrive on the big screen – so, when will it be available to stream on Disney+ or another platform?

When will The Little Mermaid remake come to Disney Plus?

The Little Mermaid will hit Disney+ on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Unlike other live-action remakes, such as Pinocchio and Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid isn’t a direct-to-streaming release. Given the box office performance of its predecessors (The Lion King made $1.65 billion), this isn’t surprising.

Avatar: The Way of Water hit cinemas in December last year and didn’t arrive on Disney+ until June 2023. The Little Mermaid was the first of a wave of summer blockbusters, followed up by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Flash, Indiana Jones 5, or Mission: Impossible 7.

For those wanting to relive the entire Little Mermaid collection, you can stream the original 1989 movie on Disney+ now, as well as its sequel, The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.

When can I buy The Little Mermaid remake?

The Little Mermaid remake was made available to buy exclusively digitally from July 25th, 2023. You will able to buy it on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 19th, 2023.

The VOD version includes multiple extra features, including bloopers, The Little Mermaid Sing Along Version, and a five-part making-of documentary, titled “Hotter Under The Water.”

Other The Little Mermaid special features include:

Song Breakdowns:

  • “Wild Unchartered Waters” – Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, gets his own song, written by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Go behind the song, from the writing to the recording, to the filming on a practical ship.
  • “Under the Sea” – Get a first-hand look at how professional dancers helped bring director Marshall’s vision to life as they stood in for the various animated sea creatures that sing and dance in this showstopping number.
  • “Kiss The Girl” – Float along and get a frog’s-eye view of the beautiful set built to film the live-action version of this classic song.
  • “Poor Unfortunate Souls” – Ursula takes viewers on a journey of making her character’s signature song.

Featurettes:

  • “The Scuttlebutt On Sidekicks” – Dive in and meet Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle, who not only have their own song, “The Scuttlebutt,” but also fresh looks as they work hard to make sure Ariel and Eric kiss before Ursula’s deadline.
  • “Passing The Dinglehopper” – Ariel met Ariel when Bailey worked with Jodi Benson — the voice of Ariel in the original animated movie — who appears in a cameo in the live-action film.
