2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was an absolute smash hit. The Nintendo franchise returned to the big screen, this time in animated form, and quickly became one of the year’s highest-grossing movies.

Now holding the record for the biggest debut of any animated flick in history, it seemed inevitable a follow-up would be close behind. And while it’s early days yet, we now know for certain a sequel is indeed in the works.

Especially after the second post-credits scene, we know Nintendo has some bigger cinematic plans in mind. So here’s the full rundown on everything we know about the Super Mario Bros Movie sequel so far.

Will there be a Super Mario Bros Movie 2?

Yes, we know for certain a sequel to the Super Mario Bros movie is going ahead. Nintendo confirmed the news in early 2024, even locking in a release date for the follow-up in doing so, more on that further down.

Moreover, Chris Pratt doesn’t just think there will be a sequel – he’s predicting a decade of movies playing out in the ‘Nintendo Cinematic Universe.’

While speaking to Extra TV: Pratt said, “You saw the movie. It really honors the video game, it honors the world of Mario and it’s very promising as to what we could expect over the next 10 years, like an entire universe of these types of movies.”

Of that aforementioned post-credits scene, Chris Pratt avoided spoilers but told Comic Book Resources: “Listen, there’s like, at the end of the film, there’s a post-credit sequence that gives you a taste of what the sequel could be about. And that gets me very, very excited. But there’s been talk of Luigi’s Mansion. That was a GameCube game. I think that would be great.”

CBR also asked about golf playing a prominent role in any potential sequel – as an homage to Mario Golf – and both Pratt and his co-star Charlie Day were very much into it.

“Ooh! Mario Golf!” exclaimed Pratt, while Day said: “I didn’t even think about that. I would definitely like to see that. That’d be good. That’s right. I’m into that. And we can do our research at Augusta!”

Super Mario Bros Movie 2 release date

The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel is set to hit big screens worldwide on April 3, 2026.

As this date was locked in years in advance, however, it’s worth keeping in mind plans could always change along the way.

Super Mario Bros Movie 2 cast: Who’s in it?

Given Pratt’s interest in making a sequel happen, it’s safe to assume he and Charlie Day would be back as Mario and Luigi in the sequel.

Seth Rogen, meanwhile, would also like to return – so much so that he’s interested in a Donkey Kong spinoff movie. Speaking to Collider, he explained: “There’s a lot of opportunity there. I think the family unit of the Kongs seems to be — and if the Fast and Furious movies have taught us anything [it’s] that it’s all about family.”

As for Anya Taylor-Joy, who voices Princess Peach, not only is she keen on the sequel, but she’d love to bring her Split co-star James McAvoy into the fold. “I think James McAvoy would smash it,” she told Digital Spy. “I don’t know who he would be, but he’s so good, and he’s so talented, and he’s so good at voices, I think he would smash Mario Bros.”

Perhaps he could voice one half of Wario and Waluigi if they were to make their debut in the follow-up? Then again, Pratt and Day already have their eyes on the roles. When Dexerto asked who they’d like to see take on the duo in a sequel, Day said: “Why would I give it to anyone else?” Pratt followed with: “Why would I give the job away? I’d give it to me.”

Last but definitely not least is Jack Black, who voices the Mushroom Kingdom foe Bowser. The jokester thinks a “Bowser’s Revenge” story would be ideal for a sequel. Speaking with ScreenRant, the actor explained: “It would be cool to have ‘Bowser’s Revenge.’ Or a spin-off that’s just ‘Bowser Town.’ Like a whole planet of Browsers. But that’s not my job. I’m not the writer. I’ll do whatever direction they want to go.”

Super Mario Bros Movie 2 plot: What will it be about?

While no official plot details have been shared for a Super Mario Bros Movie sequel, there are plenty of ideas, from Rogen’s proposed Donkey Kong spinoff to Black’s Bowser’s Revenge idea, as well as a Wario and Waluigi focus.

That being said, the film sets up another story altogether in its post-credits scene, where we see that an egg somehow made it from the Mushroom Kingdom to Brooklyn, and now resides in the New York sewer system where Mario and Luigi were first transported to the magical world.

The egg that has come this way is white with green spots – like those glimpsed in the Yoshi’s Crafted World Game. Said egg then begins to crack, and as it opens, a “Wahoo!” can be heard, signifying the birth of Yoshi.

Yoshi is an adorable dinosaur who first appeared in Super Mario World in 1990, becoming a sidekick to Mario and Luigi. When speaking about the scene – but avoiding spoilers at the time – Pratt told Comic Book Resources: “Listen, there’s like, at the end of the film, there’s a post-credit sequence that gives you a taste of what the sequel could be about. And that gets me very, very excited.”

We’ll be sure to keep this post updated when new information comes in.
