Record-setting manga was influenced by David Fincher and Tarantino, creator reveals
Manga PlusKagurabachi is a popular new-gen manga by Takeru Hokazono, who reveals the book was influenced by David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino.
Kagurabachi’s debut caused massive hype among Shonen fans who were all anticipating this new battle manga. With a little more than 40 chapters published so far, the manga is only getting more popular.
In July 2024, the manga crossed huge sales milestone. The manga has just concluded its Rakuzaichi Arc as Chihiro offers to join the Kamunabi. As more dangers lie ahead of the young sorcerer, creator Hokazono shared his inspirations behind the manga with 47 News, as posted by sandman on X/Twitter.
“Shonen Jump already has legendary manga like One Piece. I wanted to offer a new manga with my quiet, low-key, dark protagonist, and since Jump doesn’t have many revenge-themed manga, I created Kagurabachi,” the creator says.
“But I don’t want to make a simple story that sells the pleasure of revenge. I was influenced by Tarantino and David Fincher. Kagurabachi depicts an ‘exaggerated Japan’ like Hollywood films.”
Hokazon also shares he realized his dream of creating a manga during the global shutdown, and how his parents supported him after he dropped out of college. Kagurabachi fans express their excitement over Hollywood references and the fact that the story continues to intrigue them.
One fan writes, “I knew it, cause there’s no way that hallway sequence didn’t look like it came from a movie.”
“Damn man I’m proud of Hokazono dude his manga is hitting record numbers and its already an incredible story. Seeing all of his influences when it comes or his art and story direction it makes sense why it’s so good. he blends all of his inspirations together like a fine sauce mix,” adds another.
