My Hero Academia’s latest announcement leaves fans “truly disappointed”
Kohei Horikoshi/BonesMy Hero Academia fans are very disappointed with the “secret project” announcement after the manga’s final chapter.
After a successful ten-year run, My Hero Academia ended with Chapter 430. Though it was a sad affair, fans were still looking forward to the new announcements, including a “secret project”, that were to be revealed after the final chapter’s release.
However, none of the new projects turned out to be anything interesting. The manga has five events planned for the future: a digital manuscript app service, the final volume’s release, a fan book and an art book release, and a special exhibition in 2025.
But fans were still holding out hopes for the “secret project”. Many assumed it’d be the announcement of a sequel manga while some thought it could be the anime adaptation of the spin-off series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be neither. Instead, My Hero Academia announced a global popularity poll to commemorate the ending of the beloved series. The voting for the poll runs from August 5 to September 30, 2024.
This announcement has caused quite a stir in the fandom. Readers are complaining about how disappointing this latest reveal is, despite how intriguingly it was presented. One X user tweeted, “THE MHA SECRET PROJECT WAS A F*CKING POPULARITY POLL!”
“I see they’re trying to compete against Tokyo Ghoul in the most disappointing announcement of the year,” commented another.
“Is that seriously what that ‘secret announcement’ was? Ugh,” wrote a third.
“This was the big announcement? I’m disappointed,” shared a fourth.
Despite the general unhappiness in the fandom, many are also supporting the decision not to announce a sequel. The creator Kohei Horikoshi has been working hard on My Hero Academia and has been through some health issues. With the series finally wrapped up, he deserves his rest.
“As sad as I am the announcement wasn’t a sequel or spin-off… I’m also glad. Horikoshi deserves a nice long break,” wrote one fan.
“Agreed. He always said he was tired and had health issues. Realistically, that’d be torture to start an epilogue so soon,” added another.
For now, the manga’s fans will have to be content with My Hero Academia: You’re Next. The new anime movie is currently in theaters in Japan.
