Oshi no Ko recently announced a live-action adaptation, but artist Mengo Yokoyari has washed her hands of the project.

Oshi no Ko made its grand anime debut in 2023 and easily topped the popularity charts with overwhelming numbers. It was officially announced on January 24 that the series will get a live-action film and series.

The drama series will be distributed exclusively worldwide on Amazon Prime Video in winter 2024, with the live-action film being released theatrically in Japan by Toei.

The manga, by Mengo Yokoyari (art) and Aka Akasaka (story), debuted in 2020 and is still ongoing. The anime aired its first season in Spring 2023, and its second season is all set for its debut in 2024. Delve deeper to find out why Oshi no Ko illustrator Mengo Yokoyari won’t be a part of the live-action adaptation.

Shortly after the official announcement, Yokoyari announced she would not be involved with the live-action project.

She shares: “It’s hard to tweet at this timing because no matter what you tweet, it will be written in the article! (Don’t do it!) I was nervous when people were mad about that guy’s blonde hair. As for the live-action, I was in charge of supervising everything (sorry! I couldn’t secure a schedule. (It was impossible!) I’m looking forward to it from a viewer’s perspective!!!”

Although she was in charge of supervising the adaptation, she couldn’t clear up her schedule. Nonetheless, she expresses her excitement as a viewer. However, her lack of involvement might set some fans off. A huge challenge the live-action might face is bringing the unique character design to life.

Oshi no Ko anime is currently streaming on HIDIVE. As per HIDIVE, the official synopsis reads, “When a pregnant young starlet appears in Dr. Gorou Amemiya’s countryside medical clinic, he takes it upon himself to safely (and secretly) deliver Ai Hoshino’s child. But on the eve of her delivery, he is slain by Ai’s deluded stalker — and subsequently reborn as her child, Aquamarine Hoshino!

“Now, he wants to help his new mother rise to the top, but what can a child do about the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry? And what will he do when disaster strikes?”
