Lopez won in controversial circumstances

Teofimo Lopez’s performance in victory over Jamaine Ortiz in Las Vegas was uninspiring but the fight did not go down without drama or controversy.

The New Yorker was outboxed by Ortiz but somehow all three judges scored the bout in his favour, with two scoring it 115-113 and the other 117-111.

Ortiz labelled the 117-111 scorecard ‘ridiculous’ while the announcement of the result prompted boos from those in attendance.

Possible next opponents

Lopez was in tears as the result was read out before telling fans they could ‘boo all they want’ in his post-fight interview.

Although the underwhelming nature of Lopez’s performance will be the talking point in days to come, attention will soon turn to what’s next for the 26-year-old.

Lopez was quick to call out Terence Crawford after the win over Ortiz but Crawford appeared to shut that down on X, saying Lopez was just ‘trying to use my name for promotion’.

Keyshawn Davis was ringside for the Lopez-Ortiz fight having recorded a victory himself on the night, beating Jose Pedraza in the co-main event, and he and Lopez were involved in a fiery exchange afterwards.

Speaking to ESPN after that interaction, Lopez appeared to shut down the idea that Davis would be his next opponent.

“We’re talking about a lightweight!” Lopez said about Davis. “We’re talking about a lightweight over here. He hasn’t done anything.

“Just like Vasiliy Lomachenko told me — if you want to fight me, you got to get a title. Get a world title. If you want to fight the king, go ahead and get the world title. I’m not going to give it to you guys… for what? You guys want it easy! Everybody wants it easy!”

A possible meeting with with Devin Haney or Ryan Garcia could be off the cards for the foreseeable future too, with multiple reports claiming those two fighters are set to face each other in Vegas on April 20.

Other potential opponents at light-welterweight include Rolly Romero and Subriel Matias while a rematch with George Kambosos Jr at welterweight could also be an option.
