FormaL vs OpTic Gaming: Grudge Match at the CWL Pro League – Preview

Albert Petrosyan

The grudge match that the entirety of the competitive Call of Duty community has been breathlessly waiting for has finally arrived.

Luminosity Gaming will meet OpTic Gaming at the CWL Pro League Stage 2, but more importantly, LG player Matthew ‘FormaL’ Piper will face his former teammates for the first time since leaving the Green Wall.

Anticipation for this match was set in motion the moment that FormaL left OpTic for LG in what will likely go down as the most publicized roster move in CoD esports history.

He has been replaced by former LG player Sam ‘Octane’ Larew, who too will be facing his former team in this heavyweight matchup as well.

After the roster moves were officially announced, several pro players and community insiders, including CWL caster Clint ‘Maven’ Evans, warned the rest of the field that the move would greatly inspire FormaL, making him a dangerous force for the remainder of the season.

Now FormaL will look to put this new will to win on display against his former teammates Seth ‘Scump’ Abner and Ian ‘Crimsix’ Porter, with whom he had spent the previous 3+ years competing, winning 18 major trophies in the process, including his first and only World Championship in 2017.

They have all since publicly stated that they continue to be friends, despite no longer being part of the same organization.

However, once they are on the opposite sides of the main stage, they will regard each other as nothing but rivals and enemies, cursed by the sheer desire to defeat each other and prove themselves superior.

With OpTic (2-0) and LG (2-1) both being favorites to qualify for the Playoffs, this match will be an early test for both teams and a chance to establish a niche high up the Division B standings.

This match is scheduled to take place at 3:30 PM PST / 6:30 PM EST. For all scores, schedules, rosters, standings, and live-stream, make sure to visit our dedicated CWL Pro League Stage 2 hub.
