There is so much more to dive into after finishing the campaign in Destiny 2: The Final Shape, including a handful of new modes to enjoy. This includes Overthrow, a new semi-World Event that involves several different objectives.

It also plays a key role in acquiring some of the expansion’s newest Exotics, which are some of the most sought-after items in the game.

So to help you understand just how Overthrow works in Destiny 2: The Final Shape, we have a rundown of how the mode works and what you need to do to be successful in it.

How Overthrow works

Destiny 2 Overthrow activity

You can only attempt Overthrow once you have finished all the story missions in the expansion. Additionally, it can take place in each of the three major areas of The Pale Heart: The Impasse, The Landing, and The Blooming.

You can either trigger the mode in-game by going to these areas or queue up for public Overthrow by selecting the orange logo in one of the three regions on the map.

You will progress through different tiers in each run of the mode, with three total. For every 1,000 points you earn, you will unlock the next tier, which brings more difficult enemies and objectives.

The overall goal of Overthrow is to obtain enough points to trigger the final boss of a run – specifically, you will have to collect 3,000 points. You can rack up points through a few methods:

  • Kill enemies
  • Complete mini-events around the area
  • Open Corrupted Chests
  • Defeat powerful enemies

When you reach the point threshold, the boss will appear on the map, marked by your Ghost. Three different bosses can spawn for any Overthrow run, and which one you face is random.

Overthrow tips & tricks

This sounds easy enough, but it can take a lot of time and effort to get the most out of Overthrow, which means you need to know some of the little tricks here to get an edge in the competition.

Don’t focus on killing enemies

While killing the Taken in Overthrow is the easiest way to collect points, it is also the slowest. Each kill will only net you one point, and getting to 3,000 with that method is mind-numbingly time-consuming. This is why killing enemies shouldn’t be your main objective.

Do mini-events

The mini-events that will appear during a run will get you the most points in the shortest time. Each one should get you around 450 points when you finish them, and they are comprised of fighting enemies until a mini-boss spawns.

Bring friends with you

While Overthrow can be completed solo, bringing a full Fireteam will always be your best bet at getting more points. When working as a team of three, you can split up to tackle more mini-events, earning a ton of points that you would otherwise miss out on.

Look out for high-value targets

Taking down Overthrow’s bigger enemies will get you 100 points every time you defeat one. Taking out a handful per tier can go a long way in speeding up your progress through the event.

Save your Heavy ammo

When fighting the smaller enemies in each Tier, it is recommended to focus on using your two Primaries and keep your Heavy ammo saved up. Save that ammo for the final boss, so once that battle is going, you can easily take them down. You won’t have an issue at all with taking out the little guy before then with your standard guns.

Overthrow is just one new event to tackle in Destiny 2: The Final Shape and you should know about modes like the Pantheon, the new Salvation’s Edge raid, and the first episode of post-expansion content called Echoes.
