What is the ‘rat snacking’ trend on TikTok?

The ‘rat snacking’ trend is one of the latest food fads to take over TikTok. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

TikTok is home to some of the internet’s most viral trends, with millions of daily users constantly scrolling through their For You Page to interact with videos participating in them.

The platform has made several recipes and food fads go viral, such as the popular baked feta pasta that was everywhere in 2021. Also, the iconic ‘girl dinner,’ which involves putting a plate together of some leftover slices of deli meat, fruit, cheese, and crackers.

Now, a new food-related craze known as ‘rat snacking’ is taking TikTok by storm. Here’s everything to know about the quirky trend.

What is the ‘rat snacking’ TikTok trend?

Rat snacking is all about indulging in small, random snacks that combine a variety of ingredients in sometimes unexpected ways. The name of the trend is a playful nod to the way rats are often portrayed as creatures that scavenge and eat whatever they can find.

This fad encourages people to embrace their impulsive culinary desires, creating “unhinged” snacks that are as unique as they are unconventional.

TikToker Abbey (abbeyskitchen) shared her ‘rat snack’ with her 748,000 followers, which is processed cheese slices, microwaved apples topped with cinnamon, brown sugar and pecans on bread.

“When your InstaCart shopper throws in an unexpected pack of processed cheese, you turn it into a budget-friendly ‘rat snack’ with whatever else you have in the fridge,” she captioned the clip.

Other examples include an odd mix of plain chips and chocolate, a combination of cauliflower, cheese, and chili sauce, and Pringles chips with ketchup, mustard, pickles, and cheddar cheese.

At the time of writing, the hashtag for the trend has amassed over 12.6 million views on TikTok, with many users praising the food fad for its budget-friendly and relatable nature.
