Final Fantasy VII boss named as the “scariest moment” in series
Square EnixFinal Fantasy fans cite the appearance of a boss from Final Fantasy VII as the scariest moment in the franchise despite it making no sound.
While the Final Fantasy series consists of games set in fantasy and sci-fi worlds, it has its fair share of scary moments. Many of these include the strange and horrifying designs of the boss monsters, such as Safer-Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII or Ozma from Final Fantasy IX.
Final Fantasy VII is a prime source of scary moments, partly due to its basic 3D designs and backdrops that leave much to the imagination. It helps that the game was notorious for many urban legends and creepypastas at launch due to the mysteries tied to its unused content.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is finally out, prompting fans to revisit one of the most terrifying encounters from the original game, which cannot be recreated on modern consoles.
Emerald Weapon has the scariest Final Fantasy moment
A user on the Final Fantasy Reddit created a thread asking fans what the scariest Final Fantasy moment is, alongside an image of Emerald Weapon from Final Fantasy VII beneath the waves. Several users agreed with this sentiment, citing Emerald Weapon as their most feared foe.
“Emerald for sure, I can’t wait for pt 3 of remake…he’s going to be huge,” one user wrote, while another said, “Emerald. Already not a big fan of large bodies of water IRL, and Emerald made sure I didn’t like them in video games either.”
“That one is definitely up there,” one user said, “Emerald weapon made me very wary of the ocean for a long time after that in games. Especially since I submerged right on top of him the first time as a kid it scared me bad. Hadn’t saved in like an hour and he wrecked me.”
“Emerald weapon is the only thing in games that actually gives me anxiety,” another user wrote, “I was a child when I played Final Fantasy VII and just seeing it appear in front of me when you go underwater made me scream lol. Now I’m an adult and I hate the underwater sections for this reason.”
Emerald Weapon is so scary because of how alien and threatening it is. When you reach the underwater section of Final Fantasy VII, it just silently glides through the water, chasing you.
Then, if it catches you, it will almost certainly destroy you, as it’s one of the hardest bosses in the series. If you don’t go into that battle with the best loadout, it will swiftly annihilate you. And even if it doesn’t, you need the special Underwater Materia. Otherwise, your characters will drown.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth hinted at Emerald Weapon in its early trailers, and while fans are still scared of it, they can’t wait to see what it looks like in the third entry of the remake trilogy.
