Customer removes 15% automatic tip after server refuses to give him tap water
FlickrA Reddit user has gone viral after they shared a bizarre experience where a waitress simply refused to give them tap water. They got their revenge by refusing to tip.
The subject of tipping has been debated endlessly, both on the part of the customer, and the server. In November, for example, we saw a waitress go viral when a couple refused to tip her, simply because she could not adjust their bill.
In December, we saw a delivery driver charge a woman three times for their services, even though they failed to successfully deliver her order.
Now, a customer has gone viral on Reddit, explaining their strange tipping situation.
“I went to dinner by myself at a sit down restaurant. I noticed on the menu that 15% auto gratuity would be added to every bill,” they begin.
“I ordered an appetizer and a meal and requested water to drink. She brought me a bottle of water and I told her I’d prefer a glass of tap water. I kid you not she said ‘we don’t have water’. I asked if there was a sink and she said no. I argued with her about surely there’s a sink she can fill a glass from and she flat out refused saying they only have bottled water.”
“When I paid I requested the gratuity to be removed and the guy that rung me out apologized on her behalf explaining the owner doesn’t allow them to give free water… it was by far the strangest interaction I’ve had in a restaurant.”
Reddit weighs in on automatic tip removal
After the user posted their story on the platform, many were quick to sympathize: “Not having running water would be an osha complaint.”
Many agreed, asking how the waiting staff even managed to wash their hands.
Some thought the server was to blame, writing: “She messed up. She had the opportunity to throw the owner under the bus and say ‘sorry, they don’t allow us to give free water. We can only sell by the bottle.’ Loss of the tip might make her reconsider the response.”
“If they had liquor in the establishment they have to give out free water. That’s ridiculous. You should shame them on yelp for it,” another asserted.
“Most states have a law that if alcohol or food is provided they have to provide a source of free water,” another told the Redditor.
Another customer went viral in January, when they raged at staff at the Sugar Factory, after an automatic tip racked up the price of her bill.
