A new AI-generated image shows what Manchester United’s new stadium could look like under plans to make Old Trafford ‘the Wembley of the North’.

It is reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in a hurry to make his mark at United having struck a deal to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the club last year.

And near the top of Ratcliffe’s agenda is the state of United’s stadium. Old Trafford was once the Premier League’s leading venue but it has been surpassed in terms of modernity and functionality in recent decades.

How United have fallen behind in recent times

Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham are among the Premier League teams to have moved into new stadiums over the past two decades and Everton will soon follow suit, while Liverpool’s Anfield and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium have both undergone significant expansions and refurbishments in recent times.

It is yet to be decided whether United will choose to regenerate Old Trafford or build a new stadium altogether, but the Mail say there are concerns that a revamp, which, although a cheaper option, would still cost close to a £1billion, would only be a short-term fix.

United already own a significant amount of land around Old Trafford, so building a new stadium altogether would not mean an upheaval in terms of the location of the team’s home matches.

The Mail reports that United’s majority owners, the Glazer family, are happy for INEOS to take the lead on the new stadium.
