Do Aston Villa have a buy-back clause for Jaden Philogene after Hull City wondergoal

Hull City star Jaden Philogene scored one of the goals of the season on Tuesday in what will surely be a contender for the 2024 Puskas Award.

The England under-21 international scored the equaliser in the Tigers’ 2-1 win over Rotherham United in the Championship on Tuesday as they continued their push to win promotion to the Premier League.

Philogene sent the away end into raptures at the New York Stadium as he picked the ball up inside the box, turning two defenders inside out before scoring with a ridiculous rabona strike which deflected in off Millers defender Cameron Humphreys.

Clips of the goal have gone viral on social media but it was far from a one off this season. The 22-year-old has seven goals and five assists to his name this term and will surely attract Premier League interest in the summer.

Can Aston Villa buy Philogene back in the summer?

At the front of the queue may be Philogene’s former side Aston Villa. Unai Emery is a fan of the youngster and the decision to sell him came with the caveat of a buy-back clause.

Villa have agreed a clause which means they can buy Philogene for £15million this summer, if Hull City are promoted to the Premier League.

If another club betters that offer, though, City are in a position to accept that offer and Villa would have to match it in order to re-sign the player.

“He’s not their player, he’s a Hull City player for sure, that I can tell you for sure,” Hull City vice-chairman Tan Kesler told Hull Live.

“I love social media, I’m starting to love it even more. I’ve been open from the beginning and also you need to know, that if we promote Villa have agreed to a buy-back but only if we promote and we’re in the Premier League.

“They still have to agree with the player and they still have to match, and this is very important, they still have to match if we receive another offer.

“I think when the time comes, it would be a hefty deal for Villa to get him back, but they’re our friends so I’m not saying anything that I shouldn’t be saying here.”
