Abandoned FPS MOBA gets new lease on life as Gearbox revives dead game after 7 years
GearboxAbandoned FPS MOBA Gigantic is getting a new lease on life as Gearbox and Abstraction Games look to revive it after 7 years post-launch.
FPS MOBAs have become a bit of a big thing in recent years. With games like Blizzard’s Overwatch 2, Valve’s Team Fortress 2, and recently Square Enix’s Foamstars, the genre has seen its fair share of saturation. There’s something just so enticing about the merging of the two game types that has allowed a resurgence after all these years.
One such FPS MOBA was Gigantic. Developed by independent game studio Motiga back in 2017, Gigantic saw a short lease on life, being around for about a year before eventually being shut down in 2018.
However, Gearbox and Abstraction Games are looking to take a swing at the title, reviving it with a new form of payment system not known to the genre.
Gigantic: Rampage Edition has been listed as coming soon on Steam. The second coming of the FPS MOBA will instead be a pay-to-play game, with all cosmetics and heroes being unlockable through gameplay.
This is in stark contrast to games like Overwatch 2, which have moved to a free-to-play model, including heroes and cosmetics in an in-game store for real money.
Gigantic is set to re-launch on April 9, 2024, to PC, Playstation, and Xbox, and will cost $19.99. The re-launch will also include new features not seen in the original, with enhanced gameplay, cross-platform play, and the promise of free post-launch support.
For players keen to hop back into the action early, Gigantic: Rampage Edition’s Rush mode will be available in a Closed Beta Test on Steam, starting on February 22, 2024, at 12 PM PST.
