Legendary Discworld series gets first RPG in 25 years
Modiphius/Terry PratchettPratchett fans rejoice as news has reached us through the Clacks of a brand-new RPG set in Discworld’s Ankh-Morpork and beyond.
RPGs are about to return to fan-favorite, familiar, flat ground. Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series has brought joy to readers for decades, and players will soon be able to experience the Disc for themselves once more.
Modiphius has reached an agreement with the Pratchett estate that will allow them to produce official Discworld RPGs, with the first focusing on Ankh-Morpork and elements of the wider Disc.
Why Pratchett and RPGs are a perfect match
For any TTRPG players wondering why a Discworld RPG is such an enticing prospect for fans, RPG DNA was threaded throughout Discworld from the beginning, sparking within Pratchett’s all-time-great affinity for characters and stretching the bounds of genre and storytelling.
This affinity for gaming goes right back to Discworld’s inception, with Rincewind’s beloved and belligerent luggage originally being a creation of Pratchett’s for his own D&D campaign.
It must be pointed out that this isn’t the first time that Pratchett’s Discworld has been adapted for the tabletop. That honor goes to Steve Jackson Games’ 1998 effort, using its own GURPS system. While that game still holds a fond place in many fans’ hearts, the time has come for Discworld to receive the attention it deserves in the modern era of RPGs and their ever-growing popularity.
Discworld is in safe hands with Modiphius
For long-time fans anxious that Discworld might not be given the adaptation attention it deserves, fear not. This isn’t just a cash-grab project that is trading on Discworld’s enduring popularity to enter the TTRPG space.
Modiphius’ reputation working with established IPs should speak for itself, with successful RPGs built around Fallout, John Carter of Mars, Conan, and more. These are huge names with passionate fanbases, and Modiphius has yet to misstep and give those fans pause.
In order to create games that will appeal to lifelong readers and really do Pratchett’s work and world justice, Modiphius is keen to receive fan feedback on future Discworld projects. The Discworld fan survey can be found right here.
We can be sure that Modiphius – with approval from the Pratchett estate – will give Discworld their all, thanks to their RPG pedigree and clear love of the material.
Coming directly from Modiphius’ founder and Chief Creative Officer Chris Birch:
“I’m sure many of us have Terry’s unique world in our mind’s eye when we’re roleplaying. Ankh-Morpork has had such a special place in the community and is full of so much character it was a great place to begin our journeys on the Disc.”
The Discworld RPG Kickstarter from Modiphius is set to launch in late 2024. We’ll be sure to let fans all across Roundworld know more as soon as news is available.
