Man accused of fatally shooting 15-year-old over “talking smack” in video game
NBC DFWA 35-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting a 15-year-old who ‘talked smack’ to him in a video game.
The shooting happened on August 18, 2024, in Crowley, Texas. Just hours after the incident, police found 35-year-old Deeven Jones and took him into custody.
According to NBCDFW, the investigators on the case wrote that Jones and the victim were playing video games and engaging in “smack talking.”
A witness who made a statement to the police said they heard the victim and Jones have a quick back and forth before it turned deadly.
The police statement alleges that Jones pulled out a firearm and shot the boy in the chest before leaving the home with the weapon. He was found in Fort Worth, Texas, later that same evening and arrested with a $260,000 bond.
He’s been charged with murder and tampering with evidence due to leaving the scene with the gun used to commit the crime.
According to Sellers Law Firm, the murder charge in Texas is a first-degree felony and can be punishable with at least five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
This isn’t the first time someone has been harmed over a video game dispute. Back in June, a man was arrested after flying to Florida to attack his rival with a hammer.
The man was arrested for attempted murder and burglary after allegedly getting angry at the victim while playing ArcheAge, a decade-old MMORPG game that’s maintained a rather sizable player base over the years.
After arriving in Florida, the attacker allegedly stopped at Ace Hardware to pick up a hammer and flashlight before sneaking into the victim’s house.
Back in 2023, a Chinese streamer was attacked by a man wielding a sword. The incident took place in the middle of a livestream and ended with the streamer getting his hand cut off.
