What is Scribing? The new ESO system coming in Gold Road

Scribing is a brand-new feature coming to the Elder Scrolls Online in Gold Road which will let players customize unique skills and tailor their playstyles.

The Elder Scrolls Online is no stranger to innovative and exciting gameplay features, previous Chapters have brought systems like antiquities and companions to the game.

Now Gold Road is bringing another new gameplay feature for players to experiment with.

Scribing will let players “play with the nature of magic itself.”

What is Scribing in Elder Scrolls Online?

The new system designed for ESO aims to grant players more freedom to play the game their way.
Scribing allows players to collect, and then customize skills with primary, secondary, and tertiary effects. Three major resources are involved in the system.

First up, Grimoires provide the core of the customizable skill and won’t change, for example, the skill Vault on the weapon line for bows. Each Grimoire comes with three slots or sockets for Scripts, the second required resource for Scribing.

Scripts are what give you the freedom to customize a Grimoire’s core skill. Scripts allow you to add additional effects, such as adding poison damage, healing spells or another type of buff or debuff to the core ability.

Using the scribing system, your Vault could turn into an AoE poison attack, as well as providing its base damage and a quick escape.

The final resource required in the system is Inks. These are consumable items that will allow you to scribe your Script effects into your Grimoire initially. They can also be used to change the Scripts around and retool a Grimoire with new effects.

At launch, Scribing will be focused on skills found along Weapon and World lines. Allowing all players to enjoy the Scribing system, regardless of their class.

What this means is players will be able to acquire customizable skills through the Mages or Fighters guild, as well as via soul magic and their assault and support lines. Each one of these lines will have at least one unique, unlockable skill for players to toy around with.

What is Styling in Elder Scrolls Online?

Built into the Scribing system is another customizable feature: Styling.

22 different styles will be available at Gold Road’s launch. All of which can be unlocked or earned through gameplay.

Styling will let players change the appearance of the ability’s visual effects. Initially, players will only be able to change an ability’s colors.

But the devs have said there are plans to expand the system to include other options, like switching up your fireball for a flaming skull. with coming updates.
