League fans beg for Twisted Treeline and Dominion amid Nexus Blitz’s return
Riot GamesLeague players are divided as to whether or not Nexus Blitz should have been the mode to make a comeback considering how long Twisted Treeline and Dominion have been on the bench.
In League of Legends‘ early days, game modes other than Summoner’s Rift were all the rage. Even in the days before ARAM, Dominion and Twisted Treeline reigned as alternate game modes players got seriously invested in.
These modes featured different gameplay features, metas, and even item choices in comparison to the base game. Twisted Treeline had an especially long run, with the map even seeing a full rework and a long tenure on the League of Legends client.
While Arena mode was well-received and some players are excited to get their hands on Nexus Blitz, others lament that League’s game mode offering has been trimmed down so drastically over the years and that classic modes haven’t been re-visited now that Nexus Blitz is coming back.
League players want Twisted Treeline and Dominion to return
Riot GamesLeague of Legends has been around for a long time in the grand scheme of live service multiplayer titles. In the modern gaming era where live service games can be a dime a dozen and fail within just months of launching, LoL has truly stood the test of time.
However, that longevity has partially been a result of the game’s constant and relentless evolution, the pursuit of finding new ways to hold on to their audience while trying to attract new players.
The result of that constant evolution has been many old modes, items, and mechanics being left behind. And, while the return of Nexus Blitz is something players are looking forward to, some can’t help but feel that it’s a missed opportunity.
Players in this thread lamented the lack of permanent modes that can provide a shorter experience than committing to a full match on Summoner’s Rift but that don’t like the random nature of ARAM.
“Love Nexus Blitz, sad it never became permanent like they said it was going to be. The perfect kinda mode for short game times like aram, but being able to select your champ. A niche that is sorely missing in league.” claimed one Reddit user. This caused many to share that Dominion and Twisted Treeline were modes they loved for the same reason.
Coincidentally, another conversation is ongoing in a different corner of the League subreddit, one discussing that many modern League players likely have no clue what either of these older modes are. Or, even if they do know about these game modes, they never got to play them.
While Nexus Blitz may be a breath of fresh air, many wish it was Twisted Treeline or Dominion instead.
“The mere mention of twisted tree line makes my heart happy and sad at the same time. Ain’t that something.” said one melancholic Redditor.
These modes have their own dedicated base of players who are devastated that they haven’t been able to play them for years. Other than wanting to relive the glory days themselves, they also want newer players to be able to experience things like fighting off Vilemaw in Twisted Treeline or controlling points in Dominion.
All that said, it’s a small miracle Nexus Blitz has returned considering the circumstances surrounding the mode and the fact that devs weren’t confident they’d ever be able to bring it back.
While it’s great that Riot has invested time and resources into new, limited-time game modes to bring variety to League of Legends, it seems that many want to see what old modes would look like in modern League of Legends.
