Marvel MTG Universes Beyond: Release date, speculation & more
WOTC/Marvel EntertainmentFrom comics to cards, Marvel and MTG could be a match made in gaming heaven. We’ll walk you through all the details that have been revealed on the crossover.
MTG’s Universes Beyond crossovers have gone from success to success, with Tales from Middle Earth among the game’s highest-selling sets of all time. While many would have expected the LOTR crossover to be Universes Beyond’s high-water mark, the announcement of a fully-fledged crossover with Marvel has the potential to blow it out of the water.
We’ll go through all the details of the MTG X Marvel crossover and keep you updated on all the news surrounding the highly-anticipated sets.
When will the MTG Marvel sets be released?
The first Marvel X MTG set drop is scheduled for 2025. It is currently unknown whether this set will immediately be followed up by another in the same year, or if releases will be spaced out for maximum impact.
Will there be Marvel Commander decks?
It has been announced that the Marvel X MTG crossover will include ‘tentpole sets’, meaning that releases will likely be similar to Tales from Middle Earth’s full sets. That being said, Universes Beyond has had great success with its Commander decks so far. Given that Commander reigns as MTG’s most popular in-person format, it is highly likely that Marvel Commander decks will appear from 2035 onwards.
How many MTG X Marvel sets will there be?
With the announcement that the MTG X Marvel crossover will be a ‘multi-year, multi-set release’, it has been confirmed that this isn’t just a one-and-done foray into the world of Marvel, like Universes Beyond sets before. While the total number of sets in the crossover is as yet unknown, this is a long-term partnership between Magic and Marvel that could continue for years.
Which Marvel characters will be in the sets?
While the MCU has spent years carefully rolling out debuts for its characters, MTG will be able to bring in all the fan favorites at once. You can bet that the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four will play a large part in these sets right from the off.
Given the popularity of villain-focused decks in Tales from Middle Earth and Universes Beyond: Doctor Who, expect many of Marvel’s supervillains to claim the spotlight in these Marvel X MTG sets. From Doctor Doom to Galactus, there are plenty of iconic Marvel villains that the MCU has not yet touched on, who could take a starring role here.
Will Marvel X MTG focus on the MCU?
While a degree of focus on MCU is to be expected given its continued cinematic relevance, Marvel characters have had great success in other mediums of late, particularly Spiderman’s animated and video game adaptations.
In short, expect MCU characters to appear at least in part, perhaps even in a set of their own, but they will likely not be the main focus of every Marvel MTG set.
