MTG shows off how iconic Fallout Vaults work in card game
WOTC/BethesdaMTG’s Fallout set is bringing one of the series’ most iconic elements to life with the inclusion of Vault cards.
Vaults have always been one of the most intriguing parts of any Fallout game. Initially seeming to be bunkers housing the remnants of humanity, sheltering them until it is safe to re-emerge upon the earth, the truth of Fallout’s Vaults is far more sinister.
Each Fallout Vault is in fact an experiment being run on its inhabitants, ranging from the sadistic to the surreal. Exploring vaults is an unforgettable and iconic Fallout experience, and now MTG is adapting Vaults in its own unique way.
MTG Universes Beyond and Sagas
So far, MTG’s Universes Beyond sets have completely avoided early concerns that they may be cheap crossover cash-grabs. Each Universes Beyond Commander set, from Warhammer 40K to Fallout, has been made with real care and love for the adapted material. Nowhere is that more clear than in each set’s Sagas.
Sagas are a relatively new Permanent type in MTG, debuting in 2018’s Dominaria set, but they have quickly become a fan favorite.
Sagas can be used to represent all kinds of stories, from epic myths to fairy tales. Their inclusion in Universes Beyond is a perfect way to pay homage to each series’ stories in a standout way. Warhammer 40K’s Sagas were large-scaler, universe-shaping events, Doctor Who’s were episodes and serials of the show and Fallout’s Sagas are Vaults.
How Vaults work in Universes Beyond: Fallout
As Sagas, Vaults are multi-step stories that progress over several turns, or whenever a Lore counter is added to them. The earlier steps of a Vault Saga are likely to represent the experiment in progress, with the final step being its end result.
For example, Vault 112 – Sadistic Simulation allows players to tap and stun creatures in its first two steps, generating Energy Counters at the same time. Vault 112’s final step allows you to pay energy, exile cards from your library and play one of the exile cards for free. At first, the simulation keeps its inhabitants trapped within Dr Braun’s virtual playground, but eventually, the Lone Wanderer and their father break free.
Vaults are sure to be one of MTG Universes Beyond: Fallout’s most popular features. We can expect many more Vaults to be revealed ahead of the set’s launch on March 8.
