MTG Fans upset as Doctor Who overshadowed by Marvel & Fallout
MTG Universes Beyond is seeing a swell of popularity, but the announced Marvel crossover may cut into Doctor Who and Fallout’s buzz.
By all accounts, Universes Beyond: Doctor Who has been a smashing success. The hotly-anticipated set has brought many new players into the MTG fold and introduced Magic fans to the unforgettable time-traveling adventure.
While Doctor Who has succeeded in Universes Beyond’s intended goals, many fans are beginning to feel that Wizards are unintentionally kneecapping the set shortly after release.
Universes Beyond Success and spoilers
MTG has been releasing many well-received sets of late. But even with their consistent quality, there’s no denying that Wizards releases more products than they used to. The current pace of releases and reveals shows no signs of slowing down, and in some cases is even ramping up.
Unfortunately, right now it seems as though there is precious little time between any set being released and the next one being teased. This is particularly egregious for many MTG players who have been waiting for their favorite franchises to get the Universes Beyond treatment, only to see that thunder stolen by the next big announcement.
The announcement that MTG is partnering with Marvel for multiple sets to be released from 2025 onwards. This is a colossal announcement, but many fans wish that it had come at a less overwhelming time for MTG. Neither the recently-teased MTG Fallout set nor Doctor Who have been given time to breathe.
It could be suggested that WIzards are simply capitalizing on the momentum of Doctor Who’s success, ensuring players that similar products will be on the way. But many fans, such as Swmystery on Reddit, have been left confused, asking ‘Why are we getting this now, the literal day before Ixalan spoilers begin? How does it possibly make sense to announce this now?’
MTG Universes Beyond’s future
With Lost Caverns of Ixalan just weeks away, spoiler season is about to begin again in earnest. While such a glut of products can be good for adding new decks and playable options, it’s easy for even the most dedicated MTG fans to feel overwhelmed.
Universes Beyond has gone from an intriguing side project to a cornerstone of MTG in an extremely short space of time. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on Magic’s regular sets, but as of right now, in the rush to expand on Universes Beyond, Wizards risks devaluing existing UB projects.
