Wilds of Eldraine Best Commanders
We’ll walk you through the Commanders most worth building a deck around in Magic’s Wilds of Eldraine set.
As befitting Magic’s fabled fairy tale plane, Wilds of Eldraine is shaping up to be a powerful and impactful set. Strong and versatile cards are in abundance, and many new legendary creatures are proving viable as options for the Commander format.
We’ll sort through the best Commander choices from Wilds of Eldraine and give you plenty of options for putting powerful new decks together, with these cards right at the forefront.
Wilds of Eldraine has also launched with two Commander Preconstructed decks. Virtue and Valor and Fae Dominion. If you’re interested in purchasing Commander decks that are ready to go right out of the box, take a look at our decklists for each.
Best Commanders for Wilds of Eldraine
1. Rowan, Scion of War
Red and black mana decks have access to a stockpile of cards that can give you the advantage in exchange for paying some of your life. That downside is often well worth the effect you get out of it, and Rowan, Scion of War exists to turn potential negatives to your advantage.
With Commander having access to escalation options such as Descent into Avernus or black staples like Bolas’ Citadel, Rowan can double up on the payoff for losing life, leading to some unbelievably explosive turns.
Cost reduction will always have its place in Commander, and Rowan, Scion of War pulls it off with aplomb, facilitating huge, potentially game-ending plays with ease.
2. Korvold, Gleeful Glutton
Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is one of the most powerful Commander cards to come out of the original Throne of Eldraine set. Korvold, Gleeful Glutton had a lot to live up to, and it hasn’t disappointed. Paying off variety in your permanents, Korvold comes out swinging, evading, boosting its own power, and drawing you a whole handful every turn.
Both the initial casting cost of Korvold and his Commander Tax can be shaved down by sacrificing your permanents. Coming in a set with abilities like Bargain that already incentivize sacrifice, Korvold can frequently catch opponents off-guard by appearing or re-appearing earlier than expected.
3. Yenna, Redtooth Regent
Yenna starts off strong with a cheap enchantment doubling effect, but she really shines when specifically targeting Auras, as suddenly her ability becomes repeatable and scries to boot.
At minimum, Yenna will be netting you an extra enchantment every turn, so long as you have viable targets available. And when doubling up on Auras it’s possible to really go for broke, gaining extra copies of your best effects. Yenna is versatile, and powerful, and manages to stand out in colors that already excellent in supporting Enchantments.
4. Beluna Grandsqual
Adventures are a relatively new addition to MTG’s ever-growing list of mechanics, but they’re swiftly becoming a beloved staple of the game. While adventure-supporting Commanders already exist pre-Wilds of Eldraine, Beluna is the first Commander to be an adventure herself.
Having access to both of Beluna’s potential effects in the command zone grants a huge amount of flexibility to your plays, and her color identity gives you access to a wide variety of adventures to stack your deck with. Adventures can spice up many archetypes in MTG, but Beluna can consolidate them into a functioning, powerful deck of their own.
5. Eriette of the Charmed Apple
Enchantments have been on a hot streak in MTG recently. Commander Masters’ Enduring Enchantments precon came with a powerful new Enchantment Commander, and Wilds of Eldraine has continued to raise the bar with Eriette.
Eritette’s colors give you plenty of Aura options to choose and control the field, and her lifegain will keep you in the game long after her end-of-turn effect has drained your opponents of vitality.
6. Kellan, the Fae-Blooded
Auras are a big thing in Wilds of Eldraine, but Kellan shines through his focus on equipment as well as auras. Both sides of Kellan are cheap and astoundingly effective; a two mana search from the command zone is a hell of a consistency boost, and Kellan can be cast soon afterward as a creature that can quickly start boosting your field at a rate that is hard to compete with.
7. Imodane, the Pyrohammer
It can be argued that red mana’s identity is inextricably linked to Lightning Bolt. Single instances of direct damage are in abundance, and Imodaine turns that laser-focused damage into pain for the whole table.
It can often be difficult to choose whether to aim your burn damage at your opponents’ life totals, or use it to take care of their creatures instead. Imodane fully disregards this dilemma and allows you to do both, sending damage dealt to a creature right at each opponent as well.
While you’ll likely set yourself up as a target to be taken down while playing Imodane, she’ll also give you the power to take on the whole table at once and come out on top
8. Hylda of the Icy Crown
With her Wilds of Eldraine archetype revolving around tapping and stunning your opponents’ creatures, Hylda utilizes an exceptionally controlling strategy. But more importantly than just advancing the control game plan, Hylda adds some much-needed strength to your side of the board. With potential effects ranging from draw power to Creature Token generation and +1/+1 counters, Hylda ensures that you aren’t just stopping your opponents’ plays, but building up your own.
9. Agatha of the Vile Cauldron
Completing the trio of witches on this list, Agatha is a cost-reducer with an aggressive secondary ability. Red and Green offer plenty of options to boost Agatha’s power, and the stronger she grows, the more abilities you’ll be able to activate each turn and eventually run roughshod over every other player at the table
10. Greta, Sweettooth Scourge
The Tales of Middle Earth’s Food and Fellowship Commander precon was a roaring sold-out success, proving that hobbits can bring the pain when required. And now Greta follows up with her own not-to-be-taken-lightly food theme. While none of her abilities are incredibly explosive, Greta brings a lot of variety to a food-focused deck through optional draw and counters, and generating a food token on ETB keeps your cakes and pies piled high.
