Following the overwhelming success of the Tales of Middle Earth set, it looks as though MTG is investing big in adapting fantasy novels.

MTG’s Universes Beyond sets have done very well for Wizards of the Coast so far, and it’s no secret that Tales of Middle Earth is the best-performing among them, smashing many MTG sales records.

Now, the Wizards are searching for a worthy follow-up to that set. Rather than looking into any of Tolkien’s contemporaries, the company set its sights on one of modern Fantasy’s brightest stars: Brandon Sanderson.

Sanderson discusses Cosmere and MTG

MTG Universes beyond Aragorn

As part of a recent Q&A stream following his most recent project release on Backerkit, Sanderson was asked about the possibility of his novels being used for MTG’s crossover sets: Universes Beyond.

Sanderson managed to ignite fans’ interest by confirming that he was not only interested in the idea but that Wizards of the Coast had already approached him about the idea.

What’s more, Sanderson apparently would like to be included on the design team for the set, signaling both significant enthusiasm for the idea and a vested interest in ensuring that the adaptation is of the highest quality possible.

Why Sanderson and Cosmere are a perfect fit for MTG Universes Beyond

Though Universes Beyond has been branching out into video games recently with Fallout and Assassin’s Creed sets, there are multiple reasons why Cosmere would make the perfect successor to Tales of Middle Earth.

With the overwhelming success and acclaim surrounding his novels set in Cosmere – including Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive – as well as his experience finishing Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time, Sanderson is one of the very few figures whose fantasy acumen makes him a worthy followup to MTG’s Tolkien adaptation.

Additionally, It’s not as though Sanderson lacks experience bringing his style of storytelling into a gaming space, as he has been working on the Moonbreaker video game that is currently in early access.

As a sticking point, Cosmere fans shouldn’t be looking for an MTG set to launch in the near future. Sanderson mentioned that talks stalled as Wizards locked in Final Fantasy as a Universes Beyond opportunity, as that set will require a huge amount of attention. Still, there’s no reason to believe that Cosmere x MTG discussions couldn’t resume and come to fruition following the Final Fantasy and Marvel Universes Beyond set launches.
