Mortal Kombat 1 players slam NetherRealm for paywalled Halloween fatality
NetherRealmMortal Kombat 1 players are furious that a Halloween Fatality has been made premium content in a full-price game.
In a packed year for gaming, Mortal Kombat 1 has managed to stand out for fighting game fans. However, despite great reviews that praised its story and gameplay, since launch, the game has been heavily criticized by players.
Much of the frustration stems from the game’s monetization practices, which fans have called “scummy” for their prevalence and pricing.
Mortal Kombat 1’s latest update only furthers this by adding a new Fatality for Halloween that will only be available in the Premium Shop.
Premium Halloween Fatality is angering Mortal Kombat 1 players
Since the paid Fatality was announced, players have been sharing their frustrations online. Many are furious with NetherRealm for the way it’s monetizing a game that’s already full price with an additional paid expansion.
On its own, Mortal Kombat 1 is $70, with the Kombat Pack costing another $40. It’s also likely not the end, as Mortal Kombat 11 got an additional Kombat Pack with more DLC characters.
On top of that are the game’s Premium cosmetics, which have been blasted for their prices. The Halloween Fatality being paid content rather than unlockable through gameplay just supports the overwhelming feeling among fans that NetherRealm is nickel and diming them.
As one commenter pointed out, “they literally said on stream that everything will be unlockable in-game, no microtransaction bs and yet now here we are.”
Another said, “I genuinely feel scammed for buying this title.”
Making this even more frustrating for players is the poor communication surrounding the content. While the patch notes that show up when booting up the game read “Halloween Fatality added to the Premium Store,” the content is not actually available yet.
In response to a question on Twitter, WB Games Support clarified that “the Halloween Fatality will be featured in the Premium Shop at a later date, we expect this to be Friday (10/27).”
For Mortal Kombat 1 players, it seems everything about the Halloween Fatality is confusing and frustrating, from the concept of having to pay extra for Fatalities to the communication surrounding the release.
