2K has revealed the trailer for the story-based MyCareer mode for their upcoming NBA 2K20 game.

With less than a month away until NBA 2K20 hits the shelves, 2K has released the trailer for their story mode, known as MyCareer. This year features a star-studded cast including well known actors Idris Elba, Rosario Dawson, Thomas Middleditch, and more. It also features numerous NBA personalities including LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kemba Walker, and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

2K has connected with Hollywood in the past when it comes to their MyCareer story. In 2K16, the story was written and directed by filmmaker and devoted Knicks fan Spike Lee. In 2K17, you form a dynamic duo with a player portrayed by Michael B. Jordan.

Previous MyCareer stories have experimented with different arcs for your player: an undrafted rookie fighting for a 10 day contract, a promising talent burdened by hanger-on friends, an undrafted rookie who ends up playing overseas. This year it seems they’re focusing on a conflict between player and coach, with Idris Elba playing the coach.

In a behind-the-scenes video released on the same day as the trailer, we learn that the player character is a four-year college athlete who chooses to stand up for his teammate who has his scholarship revoked following an injury. We may see 2K tackle the issues of injury risk and lack of pay that go hand-in-hand with college basketball, a conversation that was elevated to mainstream media status following the infamous Zion Williamson shoe blowout/injury that occurred this past college basketball season.

Much like how the Call of Duty competitive scene will migrate over to Modern Warfare when it comes out in October, so too will the NBA 2K League move from 2K19 to 2K20. Earlier this August, T-Wolves Gaming, an expansion team for season two, defeated 76ers GC in a finals that went to all five games to claim the title of Season 2 champions.

2K League games may be played in a smaller arena compared to other esports, but they have a big energy from collections of diehard fans and plenty of smack talk between competitors. The starting dates for season 3 of 2K League haven’t been announced yet, but the rules for how protecting players in the upcoming expansion draft have just been released.
