Overwatch 2 devs tease new ‘guild system’ as a top priority ahead of launch
Blizzard EntertainmentMuch like League of Legends’ old Clans system or other groups in online games, Overwatch is soon getting its own “guild system” in Overwatch 2. Blizzard has highlighted the feature as a top priority ahead of the game’s launch, along with a tournament mode.
Overwatch 2 is going live at the beginning of October, with fans counting down the days until they’re able to get their hands on all the new content and updates.
While developing the game, Blizzard have actively been asking for player feedback, looking to incorporate new elements to the game that will please fans of the original.
One big thing players are really wanting from Overwatch 2 is more social interaction and engagement from the game. Leaks for the game late in 2021 revealed that a clan or guild type system may be a big feature of OW2 — which would do just the trick.
Fans were excited to hear about this potential inclusion and in the recent Reddit AMA, one user asked for confirmation about this added feature as well as the possible inclusion of in-game tournaments — and they got some positive news.
Will there be a Guild System in Overwatch 2?
Overwatch fans have been asking for clan’s or a similar structure for years. It appears that Blizzard have heard these requests and are looking at implementing a system that will allow players to create a Guild.
Blizzard elaborated on this concept when one Reddit user asked, “has the team been working on any social systems?”
“We are looking to add more social systems to Overwatch 2, and a guild system is near the top of the list for us.”, said OW2 devs when responding to the above question.
They then went on to add that they’ve got a lot of the team working on this development.
“A feature like this is a great opportunity and something we’re really excited about, but it’s a huge lift, not just for large sections of our team but several other departments at Blizzard. We have put significant work towards this feature, but it’s too early to talk about specifics or when it might come out.”
What about in-game tournaments?
While a guild system was described as “near the top of the list” for the Overwatch 2 team, it seems in-game tournaments aren’t quite a priority. When asked about the inclusion of tournaments, devs replied and said that it “is something that the team is starting to dig into more.”
While it may not have been one of the initial features they were working on, it appears that Blizzard are now beginning to look into it.
However, fans are disappointed that features like this are only now being explored.
With four months still to go until Overwatch 2 is transitioned over, Blizzard likely have more to reveal about the game before it does go live on October 4.
